Have you read the Terms and Conditions of the contract you signed? I am sure it will say in there what happens when a contract is cancelled.

Three shops seem to have an odd habit of charging the full price for an item then showing a 100% discount on the till receipt. Not sure why they bother doing that, I picked up a replacement SIM card and the receipt showed £5.11 followed by -£5.11.

The £1 charge is a way of checking the account number you gave them is valid and the £1 will be deducted from the first bill.

SIM cards should be activated while you are in the store, although sometimes it can take 2 or 3 hours. I am not sure how/why the OP has a problem, the phone and SIM can be returned to the shop for them to resolve... Which shouldn't involve another credit check. I recently picked up a new contract SIM from a 3 Store to replace one delayed in the post, there was no hassle, no issue, no credit check, no charge... And the replacement worked.

And no, the phone isn't the OPs to keep for free.

The only times I've ever heard of this happening is where the store didn't take the correct forms of ID to preform the credit check. Usually a sales person wanting the commission.
When the credit dept see what's been offered as proof they reject it and kill the contract and request the handset back.

We once had a store take a bank statement drawn on a US bank with all US addresses and not the customers UK address they'd given on the contact application.

Might be worth checking what was presented when the contract was made?

Is it a fact or just an opinion?

I'm also curious if this is a fact or not. Also, if they have discounted something 100% then given me a receipt with my card details, and the item, then why doesn't it belong to me?
As for the terms and conditions, from what I can see, it only mentions when I cancel, not when they do...

    Fact (and common sense).

Three's terms and conditions for returning an unwanted item "is to return the item in as new condtion and you are responsible for the device until we receive it". If not returned they will charge for the remainder of the contract and in addition may charge a cancellation fee, covered under their cancellation terms and conditions.

    But I'm not willingly cancelling.
I want my contract, and they have signed it. Now they are trying to back out...

It might be worth contacting the CEO's Office, email is executive.office@three.co.uk

    Sounds like crossed wires somewhere..

Facts have to be proved. Your common sense differs from mine.

It's not 'unwanted' in the first place. The customer didn't want to return it and to cancel the contract without charges.

other companies do this as well, used to get it all the time when i worked at tesco's
things like the free cds you get with some papers, they will scan through at a certain price then add a discount at the end, the replacement bag for lifes were the same as well

i beleive it was because thier system couldn't do free items so they had to give them a value then discount it
