The point is if you have transferred your number, then there is no way the old network can have any excuse to charge you on the old contract.

There have been a good few posts on here where MSE members say they have given instruction to close their contract, only to find, sometimes years later, that it didn't close.

I always PAC out and put the old number either on my new main number or a PAYG sim.

If OP puts it on an ORANGE PAYG, then it can be used for Orange Wednesdays.

    Exactly my point.

As if by magic ;), there is exactly such a thread today.

You provide the 30 days notice, give it in writing (by Recorded Delivery) and then confirm by phone you have done this.
By all means use a recorded delivery letter, but first follow to the letter the terms for ceasing the contract - which usually means telephoning customer services, etc. Head Office can "lose" letters and while you might have right on your side it can still be a lot of hassle.

Also, as often appears here, do not cancel your direct debit until you are certain the contract has been paid in full.

So then. Once I have got my pac code out of 3, do I wait a month? (What constitutes a month? A calendar month Jan, Feb, March etc or 15th August to 15th September etc?). When do I activate the pac? Do I supply my pac to my new provider a day or two before my 3 contract is up after my notice period?
Sorry for all the questions, but I want to make sure things go as smoothly as they can.

Once you have your PAC you can use it any time during the last 30 days. No matter when you use it within those 30 days you will still pay for the 30 days.

I normally suggest using it somewhere around day 22 to 26 (leaving a little time in case of a delay or problem in porting out).

    Hey fellas,
Me again. Sorry to appear dumb (I had a stroke 4 years ago) and sometimes it takes a while for the penny to drop, so bear with me.

As I said, my contract ends on the 23rd July, so by requesting my pac on the 23rd of June, that sets the ball rolling?

Once I have requested the pac, as long as I submit it to my new provider within those 30 days, my contact with 3 will terminate on the 23rd July and I will no longer owe them any money??? You usually pay in advance every month.

    Many thanks

Your contract doesn't 'end' on any date. All that ends is your minimum term, and your phone will continue to work as normal. Do not get worked up on any particular date.

Your contract ends when the number leaves the donor network, if you actually WANT your old number, you then enter the brinkmanship game. The network will start your notice period for departure, but if you DARE activate the transfer under the 30 days notice period, then the old network will charge you for the number of days you left before he notice period expires.

Depending on your usage, Ovivo (also PAYG) may work out significantly cheaper than Giffgaff.

If you use the free Ovivo monthly allowance, you get 150 minutes, 200 texts and 500mb each month for £0

If the OP wants to stay with Three, there's a £6.90 SIM plan that he could consider moving to.
