Navy Blue polo shirts-buy from school or not?

i bought logo polo shirts when my son started school, he wore them under his logo sweater - then once summer arrived i realised he was pretty much the only kid wearing logo polos, the others had plain ones bought elsewhere. doh!
the logo shirts were very poor quality to be honest, and odd shapes - they weren't uniformly sized (haha!) so it was trial and error to find one that fitted, some were long and narrow, others short and fat. i don't know where they were made but they must have been really cheap!
i bought elsewhere on the basis of quality - but if he'd been the only child not wearing the 'proper' polo shirt i would have given in and bought the logo ones.'bad mothers club' member 13

I know quality can vary, but TBH when I was buying the logo-ed ones from school they did last and last and last ... If you can buy big, they may well do a couple of years and still be going strong for his little sister!
Sweatshirts, on the other hand ... mine used to chew the cuffs! Of course I never fed them at home ...Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
We have only had to buy one sweatshirt- thankfull the school hasn't yet caught on to the logos on everything that seem to be in other schools- some have fleeces, polo shirts, gym bags aswell as sweatshirts:eek:
DD lost her sweatshirt to the lost property bag in her first year- even though it was labelled- so they picked her out another one, but it was a bigger size, so she's had three years wear out of one payment. How very MSE:p
Have ordered a new one for this year, at £10 each they are a bit steep, but they do wash and iron well and bought on the large side may see her through another few years.Member of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19

I think from what has been posted, that I will perhaps buy one polo shirt from the school, cos of course his polo shirts are not going to be seen under his sweatshirt till the summer. That gives me chance to find out what the qualility is like and then come summer if all the children are wearing the logo ones I can buy some more at a time when I'm not replacing the rest of his uniform and buying his sister hers.
Meanwhile if any does see plain navy polo-shirts for sale anywhere, would you be so kind to post and say where.0 -
Hi Spendless
If you claim tax credits - you may be able to get a grant from your county council towards uniform. I did this - for the 1st year in senior school I got £51, and can claim £20 (ish) every year. Don't know if this if for lone parents only?Debt at 2nd LBM (!) Jun 08 £8,435 - hm, let's not go there!!

i think they do all colours in places like asda and tesco too, maybe even woolworths,
i wish my DD didnt have to wear white polo shirts, they get so grubby so quickly!0 -
The OFT wrote to all schools earlier this year to tell them that it was no longer acceptable to require uniforms to be bought through the school or from only one supplier, and that parents must be told of alternative, cheaper, places to buy their uniforms. You could phone the school and ask them about this. Also some schools will buy back old uniforms and sell them second hand to parents looking for cheaper options so you could also ask about this0

our school has just changed to the national schoolwear shop - very expensive shop in town. but the letter tells us that plain clothes are fine, logo isn't a requirement.
even so, i think i'd see how many others wear the logo before deciding for sure.
can you tell when navy gets dirty? :rotfl:'bad mothers club' member 13
