Log into your router with http://192.168.0.1/start.htm username admin, password sky and look at your Modem info, should be something like

    ADSL Firmware Version A2pB018e.d16f
    Modem Status Connected
    DownStream Connection Speed 8190 kbps
    UpStream Connection Speed 397 kbps
    VPI 0
    VCI 38

If you go to the bottom of the page click on show statistics, and have a look at your noise margin, it should be around 7db or greater for downstream.

    Below is what I get.
    Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8190 kbps 397 kbps
Line Attenuation 46.0 db 27.3 db
Noise Margin 10.4 db 24.0 db

Have a look at skyuser.co.uk for more help.

    ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1376 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 56.0 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 7.3 db 14.0 db

Online speed test still says about 300kbps downstream and a ping to google is 80ms average rofl!

With an attenuation of 56dB, you should be getting considerably faster speeds - roughly 4 Mbps I would guess.

I get 2.7Mbps on Sky with attenuation of 63dB.... basically the lower this figure, the nearer you are to the exchange and the better the potential speed...

    ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2784 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 63.5 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 6.5 db 13.0 db

I would recommend you look at your telephone wiring and see if it can be improved:

I found this chart seems to be pretty accurate in my experience:

  • well I was told by someone on a forum it takes the sky line about 10 days to get up to speed.. is this a myth?

  • Brilliant.. messed around with the filters and adapters and managed to get the download speed up to 3meg on the router, realistacally getting 2.5mbps which I'm happier with.

Will mess around with internal wiring tomorrow to improve some more.

Wonder if its worth downgrading to the £5 a month package if im getting such lower speed?

Well done MK, The only downside of downgrading to the 8mbps package is the 40gb download cap (never bothered me though) and your upload speed will be reduced a bit only bothersome if you are uploading lots of big files.

The 10 day settling down process does not apply to Sky's LLU service.

PS That DSL zone link above is great, I got the biggest improvement on my set up by removing the bell wiring from my extensions.
I'd start by connecting to the test socket on your master socket.

    Some good general info here:

The reason I pay the £10 a month is for the much faster 768kbps upload speed (compared with 416kbps) which is also useful if you work from home using a VPN connection.

The download limit is a lot higher at 250Gb (unofficially) rather than the 40Gb of the Mid package.

If neither of these things affect you then no point paying the extra £5..

    Thanks
