Advice (technical info included) with ADSL

Hihi.

3KM away from nearest exchange (postcode LS17 8AY)
Excange supports ADSL Max (Moortown Exchange)

When typing the phone number into BT ADSL Line check I get:
"Your exchange is ADSL enabled, and our initial test on your line indicates that your line should be able to have an ADSL broadband service that provides a line rate up to 1Mbps. However due to the length of your line the 1Mbps service may require an engineer visit who will, where possible, supply the broadband service.

Our test also indicates that your line should be able to support a potential ADSL Max broadband line rate of 2.5Mbps or greater."

When i try other postcodes the details are a lot higher.

Now I'm getting Sky TV instlled on Tuesday with the idea of buying Sky Max 16mb Broadband with it. It costs £10 a month with BT line rental of £11. Calls free tc.

Can anyone advise me what type of speeds I'll actually see, and whether there are better value packages around if i'm going to be getting a lower speed, and finally if Virgin Media may have something to offer thats better.

Thanks

the speeds you see on the telephone number is the ones you'll most likely get. Postcodes only refer a nominal result, phone numbers is specific for each particular line

Cool! Check the broadband checker at http://www.samknows.com to see if Sky has the Local loop (LLU) enabled in your local exchange, if so then you might be able to get the 16mb package from them!

Ye Sky is enabled and granted I used the BT Broadband Line Checker and just assumed that whatever BT would allow, it would be the same for all of them!

But you've given me some confidence that there is a chance I can get higher speeds so thank you!

    - just remember that you still will not get 16mb, probably closer to 6mb looking at it ratio wise

What you get depends on a number of factors, the as the crow flys distance from the exchnge may not be very accurate. Internal wiring can also affect what you get.
There is a good article on Speed/Attenuation factors here.

    GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Im one of the unlucky ones.

Getting BIG problems with Sky atm. They have an incorrect postcode on my account so viewing card never got to mine for wen sky engineer came thus i spent 2 hours on phone to 0870 number before they corrected the postcode and then spent another hour ordering broadband before being told i have to wait for 2 days...

So after 3 hours on the phone to 0870, I have no Sky TV Viewing card (which i dont know if it is 100% being sent out again), I have no broadband on order, and I NEED BOTH!

    Getting so angry here

If I try the BT checker it says I'll get 2.5 Mb but my next door neighbours can get 4 and 4.5 Mb which is closer to what I actually get.

One thing I can guarantee is you'll not get 16 Mb and unless you need the unlimited downloads you'd be better off on the mid package at £5 per month for a 40 GB download limit.

Have a look at the graphs here to see the drop off in speeds related to line length on the different packages available, I'd say at 2.5 Mb estimate your going to be somewhere near to 55to 60 dB so will possibly be worse off on ADSL2.

P.s. Use Say NoTo 0870 to find an 0800 or 01XXX number for Sky.
