Best way to get rid of my car?

Hi all
My car failed it's MOT and would cost too much to fix than it's worth (brakes aren't in great nick at all).
Basically it's time to get rid of it, but I'm not really sure what my options are.
I could put it on ebay for 99p and see what happens, the engine is fine and someone could either fix the car if they knew what they were doing or use it for parts, so someone might take it away.
The other option as far as I know is to scrap it, but I don't really know what that entails and/or if it would cost me any money to do so.
Any ideas? Sorry if this has been asked before, I did check the last 5 pages or so.

In our local yellow pages there are scrap dealers that will come to you, and take your car for free. Make sure they sign the documents for you though! Others will pay you a small sum if you can get the car to them (although with no MOT this is difficult to do legally).
Sorry can't advise on the ebay option.working on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?0 -
Some companies in my area pay a little something for scrap cars, in some cases it's £5 but can vary... Make sure you get the certificate to say it's been scrapped, and also ensure DVLA confirm that it's no longer registered to you - don't want any unpaid road tax fines or speeding fines etc on your doormat0

There's a large group of people that may want the car, assuming it's not too bad. Certainly some dodgy brakes wouldn't put them off.

What make/model of car is it - and it's year?
If you taking a car to it's MOT, your allowed to drive it on public roads to get there. So surely if your driving a car to be got rid of, you can drive it to get there?! (Don't know, just asking the question!).
If you can't get it to a scrappy yourself, I personally wouldn't let anyone come and get the car for free! I'd be looking to advertise in the papers etc as spares of repairs or on eBay.
Just because a car isn't roadworthy, doesn't mean it still doesn't have £100's of value to the right person.0 -
It's an L Reg Citroen AX (1.4 diesel)
Tax is up at the end of the month too, another nail in the coffin.
Thanks for the posts so far0 -

Yeah sorry, the car we let the scrappy come and take for free had an expired mot so couldn't be driven and only cost OH £100 in the first place!!working on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?0 -
Put it on freecycle, saying that its for spares and parts, and has failed its MOT, but anyone who wants it must take it away. I'll bet you get some responses!
Otherwise our local scrap merchant collects, and pays - only about £35 but better than nothing, so there's probably someone in your area too.0 -
check round locally there are now garages licenced to recycle your car.they will give you a certificate for dvla to proove its been done prop most are free and at least if no one else wants your car its not just sitting in a huge scrap yard.was amazed at all the stuff that gets made out of them.Lead us not into temptation...
just tell us where it is and we'll find it....0 -

I would have thought that sitting in a scrap yard is the best solution….that way lots of bits get reused as parts before the remainder goes off to be melted down0 -
eBay it, say no tax and no MOT, someone will still give you £50 for it though!0
