I wouldn't worry too much about airport security. End of last month I broke my elbow in 2 places - they tried to set it back in place with a cast but it moved and ended up having an operation to have a metal plate and pin fitted and a couple of screws. As you know I went on holiday recently and only set it off at Aberdeen but I probably only have a small amount of metal compared to your DD.

I'm lucky in that I don't have a cast on since the op but struggle to fully extend my arm now and i'm told this is really hard to get back

Sorry to hear about your DD Tinyshoes. Tell the school examinations officer once half term is over. Some exam boards will slightly upgrade results for things like this, it's worth trying anyway.
