  • Hi YL, please don't take this the wrong way but is there any reason why you can't lose some weight, ie medical conditions etc?

Firstly it will be better for yourself being healthier and secondly it might open up more choice for you clothes wise. :)

This post made me laugh, then cry.
I am a registered childminder and look after 3 under 3's. I swim, cycle and power walk when I can (I had a hip replaced a few yrs ago and the weight piled on prior to that, being wheelchair bound) I honestly thought once I became mobile again, I'd lose the weight, but it seems to be glued on. I eat healthily, and excersize as much as I can. I DO NOT sit and stuff myself.

My doctor said if I wanted to lose weight, then I'd have to exist on a lettuce leaf. To me, that is not living.

So no, in answer to your question, I Do not appear to be able to lose weight.

Firstly a huge hug Yorkshire Lady. Why should you have to justify yourself to anyone? You are you, and that is what people love.
I am so pleased you posted the request in the first place as it has led me to some fantastic web sites, so I am very grateful to you.

I hope you find a great outfit and I am sure you will look fantastic. Keep us up to date with how you are doing with your hunt.

Sorry YL. I didn't mean to upset you. :o

Please tell me if I'm talking out of turn here though.

I don't think thats good enough from your doctor to be honest. I've got a bit of a gripe with them at the moment so they all take a bashing. But, if you eat healthily and exercise regularly then your GP should investigate why you can't lose any weight. It could be something like you have a thyroid problem and for them to just dismiss it and suggest you eat lettuce is frankly wrong. You are entitled to, and deserve, a proper medical assesment.

Sorry if I'm sounding like an @rse. I don't mean to. Just happens quite regularly. :)
  • Don't worry SS, I guess I'm just emotional at the moment! My doctor takes an attitude that she's there to deal with ill people, and I'm as healtthy as an ox apparently!

I know this may sound odd, but have you looked at Ebay? Look under : Jacques Vert, Condici, Gina Bacconi, Frank Usher, and "Mother of the Bride". There are hundreds of outfits, usually worn only the once, and reasonable prices. My stepson is getting married in July, and I bought my whole Jacques Vert outfit (Dress, Jacket, shoes, handbag and Hat) for £80. New it would have cost £500! I bought my mother-in-law's too. Hers was a £400 outfit, and we got it for £40.
There are loads of large sizes on there too, in fact, more large ones than 12/14!
    Good Luck!
    I Believe in saving money!!!:T
A Bargain is only a bargain if you need it!

  • I've looked on Ebay for weeks! LOL, to tell you the truth, I've actually bought 3 outfits from there already! 2 arrived and are 'ok', but I want more than ok! The 3rd should arrive this week. I am quite adaptable, in that I can see myself in either dress/jacket, skirt/top/jacket or a nice dress on it's own. Some of the larger sizes look like sacks unless they are modelled. One of the outfits was a dress and long jacket in dusky pink. It looked lovely on the size 12 model, but when you translated it to me.....hhm, well, I looked frumpish. I'm only 44, 45 on July 1st, so I don;t want to look like a granny!

If anyone knows a recent mum of the bride - size 28 ish, then PLEASE ask her if she wants to sell her outfit!!

    Hi Yorkshire-Lady,

I'm a bit suprised by your doctors attitude but if they are under great pressure to prioritise then I guess it's understandable to a degree.

I get the feeling that you have decided to be happy with your shape, which is grear but if you are interested in losing weight then I can recommend joining a class and I would personally recommend Rosemary Conley.

They are not doctors but they are thoroughly trained and for a small price you get personal attention.
The thing that stands out about RC for me (over slimming world and weight watchers) is that they actually do exercise (and promote it heavily).
I absolutely love the salsa class I go to.
They help in numeous ways and there is a gret deal of support.
I have found that I have been a lot more disciplined because I know I am going to be weighed at the class.

I have heard that you are 3 times more likely to suceed by going to a class and I can believe it.

At RC they help in so many ways. We get weighed at the class and get a talk and exercise, but we also get emailed recipes and you really do feel that you could phone the instructors anytime.
    I have found them inspirational.

Everyone there is understanding and regardless of whether you are 9 stone or much larger, everyone is understanding and supportive.
I am now at the lower end of the scale but everyone knows that it wasn't easy and took a lot of work so everyone is very supportive regardless of size.

There is also a good thread on these boards where people share recipe ideas and give each other support.

BTW - I have no formal connection to RC (as I know it sounds a bit like that). I'm just a happy and successful customer.

and I',m not being sarcastic, but it's really damn difficult trying to get stuff in a 12 these days !!! These sizes are always gone !!

    Hi there yorkshire-lady
sooooo glad you found something at BON-PRIX...i found it by putting plus size clothing in google :-).....i have had several items from there, and it is so refreshing to pay the same price for any size....so i hoped it would help you!

I think im similar to you....even though im bigger than i should be my SIL is a size 10/12....but she is constantly eating junk, catches every bug going and is always feeling run down...i on the other hand eat enough fruit n veg to sink a battle ship..cook everything from scratch using organic and local farm assured produce where ever possible...and have the constitution of an ox :-)
SIL even admits that she may be "fitter" but i am deffinitely "healthier"... i cant remember the last time i got a cold/bug
finding clothes that flatter is the only area of my life that i have a problem with...
I must admit that i am in the throws of increasing my activity levels...at the mo we are 15 mins car journey away from the nearest shop - so walking to shop isnt an option, but at the end of the month we are back off to Germany for 3 years so i will be able to walk to do the shopping, and am planning on fetching what we want every day for that 1 days meals...extra exercise and money saving all at once..........yeehaa
But its nice to have found somewhere that i can get clothes whilst i tackle my weight.....
hope you feel a million dollars for the wedding !!!!

Sorry but I HAVE to disagree with this comment.

90% of shops stock size 12. Less than 10% stock my size. I looked in New Look today, as they go up to a size 26. They have a small selection, but they are to be congratualted on the choice. However, I picked 10 different items up to look at, and NON of them were still available in a size 26. Onle a few of them still had 24's. I mentioned it to the manager, who stated that the sized 26 chothes are their fastest sellers. As soon as they get a new range in, the 26 sells within hours.

One day, the UK will recognise the true need for larger sizes. Until then, we'll just have to suffer.

    Hi Sally,

I've been following this thread with interest. I'm finding the posts suggesting losing weight really hilarious, as if it was that easy and you'd never thought of it before!!!

Anyway, I've been thinking about you alot. I am overweight so I totally understand your frustrations. I can tell you want something really glam and special and I really hope you find it. I can't really suggest anywhere to look though and I'm sure you know this already but you can really make an outfit with you accessories.

If you don't fancy a hat then there are some gorgeous other alternatives available these days, and a fab bag and shoes and gorgeous jewels. I think if you pick something really simple but maybe in a stunning colour that suits your colouring and really go to town with the accessories I think you could easily do your daughter proud!

I do hope that ypu find something you're comfortable with though. I know how important it is
