I actually found it annoying having a Scot ruling the UK.

It would need an overarching federal entity, similar to America, however many countries have devolved government (like Scotland) whilst being part of a larger national union.

    Don't be so utterly silly.

Did the union of the American states mean the end of democracy?

    And why on earth not?

Do you really think a German taxi driver is any more different to a British shopkeeper or a greek restauranteur, than say a french speaking Louisiana swamp farmer is to a Chinese immigrant restaurant owner in LA is to a Jewish deli owner in New York?

    Really?

Because if you do then I suspect you know very little about America...

Makes little difference what you think.

People with more vision will ensure we keep heading towards greater integration over the long run.

It'll take time to bring the masses along, and there will be a few hiccups along the way, but progress will not be stopped by the backwards looking isolationists.

You can't just say "America" and be done with it.

The two places (EU and US) are completely different.

I really would like to debate with you Hamish, but at every point, in every single point you make, you insist on making out those you are debating with are somewhat less intelligent than yourself.

It's really off putting that you have to do this every time. If it's not racist, it's intelligence. If not intelligence it's xenophobics.

Theres not been a post recently on this subject where you haven't resorted to this sort of language.

Argue without it. The majority of the rest of us are doing so.

For someone that endlessly spouts on about the wealth created by higher house prices. I found the two comments above totally ignorant. A total lack of knowledge of centuries of European history and also a total smear against the integrity of the German people as a whole.

I thought the Scottish wanted independence?

You still haven't answered why we need a USE?

If it is to end up like America I don't see that as necessarily aspirational.

I've spent more time living and working overseas, in more countries, than most on here.

But back to Germany, it is on a course of long term decline, the economic prosperity it has seen has nothing to do with some miraculous teutonic success story and everything to do with benefiting from an artificially low currency for it's exports for a decade.

And now that it can no longer lend money to it's neighbours so they can buy it's surplus production, the German people will start to feel the pain they have inflicted on so many others.

    A clear majority do not.

    .

    I have.

You just don't like the answer.

I think they are more resilient than that they will just move onto the east.

Much the same as the American corporations do.
