Would you fancy a Greek or Cypriot politco as EU chancellor deciding on economic policy?

I'd fancy an EU chancellor that had talent and ability.

And wouldn't dream of using silly nationalistic stereotypes to determine whether or not that ability was there.

Not a stereotype, think they have proven they are incapable of running an economy.

An organisation the size of Europe would be run on backroom deals with very little democracy. It is just too big with too many varying interests.

Example being the presidency. Nothing to do with ability, just everybody gets a turn on a 6 monthly basis. How daft is that?

    Really?

Every single person of greek and cypriot national origin has proved themselves incapable?

If that isn't a daft stereotype (bordering on racism in fact), then I don't know what is.

To rule out a candidate for such a job based on preconceived stereotypes of their national origin and heritage is plumbing the depths of stupidity.

I want the best and most talented candidate.

And don't give a flying monkey where they were born.

And yet the similarly sized USA is the most powerful nation on earth, with the biggest economy on the planet, and is a bastion of democracy.

Is there something about us as Europeans that makes us incapable of emulating such success?

I did not refer to the Greek or Cypriot populations, but their politicians.

Most people in the USA are there because they they or their ancestors chose to live there. Europe is a different game as most will consider the best interests of their own country boyond some common good.

    Why don't we?

    Not really an answer.

What does it add particularly for mature nations apart from a warm cosy feeling?

Sorry, are you now trying to say that politicians don't come from the population?

Are you really trying to suggest that Greece and Cyprus are somehow incapable of turning out talented people?

And if not, why raise the issue at all?

Well, not the african american population, but I get your point.

All the more reason to provide them with an incentive to consider the common good rather than being so parochial and petty.

Small, backwards looking, isolationist countries are no match economically or politically for integrated giants like the USA.

Only through enlargement and integration can we hope to compete, and therefore look after our own interests most effectively.

I would suspect what will happen is that teh most dominamt nation within Europe (Germany) will end up running the whole thing. It's what happens when people or nations of different strengths are artificially bound. Best to steer clear.

    Biggest bully perhaps?

I am not sure that they are the "best" example to follow, they just tell people they are.

Powerful economy - or just bigger and faster "printing presses"

I guess we better ask those in Guantanmo Bay what they think about democracy.

Or better yet, just design a system where that doesn't happen and then reap the massive rewards of integration.

Cannot see that being possible. There is no common goal.
