Small, backwards looking, isolationist countries are no match economically or politically for integrated giants like the USA.
Only through enlargement and integration can we hope to compete, and therefore look after our own interests most effectively.

Cannot see that being possible.
Then you have a lack of vision. There is no common goal.
Of course there is.
Greater prosperity, security and standards of living.
All of which would be enhanced by working together, rather than descending into a continent filled with bickering, small, isolationist countries.
We've been there before.
It never ended well.“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.

Well good. That worked well, didn;t it.
75% unemployment in some parts of Greece now. Meanwhile Germany enjoys record employment levels.0 -

Not for long. That worked well, didn;t it.
I was referring to the common goal, not the half baked attempt we've had at implementing it so far, which obviously hasn't worked as full fiscal and monetary integration hasn't been implemented.

That would need political integration. Would also be the end of democracy. Theres no way EU wide democracy could work.

Think even Hamish realises it is just a dream where everybody will be nice and look after each others interests.0

It would need an overarching federal entity, similar to America, however many countries have devolved government (like Scotland) whilst being part of a larger national union.Would also be the end of democracy..
Don't be so utterly silly.
Did the union of the American states mean the end of democracy?Theres no way EU wide democracy could work
And why on earth not?
Do you really think a German taxi driver is any more different to a British shopkeeper or a greek restauranteur, than say a french speaking Louisiana swamp farmer is to a Chinese immigrant restaurant owner in LA is to a Jewish deli owner in New York?
Really?
Because if you do then I suspect you know very little about America...I'm out.
Makes little difference what you think.
People with more vision will ensure we keep heading towards greater integration over the long run.
It'll take time to bring the masses along, and there will be a few hiccups along the way, but progress will not be stopped by the backwards looking isolationists.“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.

It is of course very attractive to see USE modelled on USA, however who knows we may get a USSR instead.
USA grew organically over time in unique circumstances; their constitution is a few paragraphs long whilst the EU is many thousands of page of inpenetrable prose; individual people chose to migrate there rather being co-oped in.
all very different from the European situation
even then it's worth remembering that USA had a very bloody civil war0
