I am looking to upgrade my phone as I have an old Sony Walkman phone. I know people in this forum are talking about the Huawei Ascend, but is that really the best I can do in terms of both function and how the phone looks??
From the reviews the Huawei looks cheap to me. I have seen the Sony Xperia phones which look good but I don't know how good they are for web browsing, or i I coulddo better with a Chinese company at a similar price.
I suppose I might be willing to go a little over 100 to find the right phone, but it is difficult to justify unless it is very compact, and will be a permanent mp3 player, and have a good 5mp camera on it. I am clueless about phones really. I tend to upgrade every 8 years on average.

Amazingly, even though it's now not in any way new, the Huawei G300 is still the best Android phone under £100 imo. To get better value for £100 you would probably need to go to a Windows phone, where the Huawei W1 and Nokia Lumia 520 have amazing specs for the money.
Android wise, the San Diego at £100 from Orange (but locked to them for 3 months) is a killer deal but sadly out of stock now.0 -
Yesterday, Orange were selling the San Diego for £49.99 but it is now out of stock, so keep your eyes open for it coming back into stock, or they may have it in store.

£50 for the San Diego is a billy bargain.0

I have seen these on Hotukdeals but didn't buy because I don't want to be tied to Orange. Is it that you have to top up a certain amount within 3 months on the San Diego, and don't the phones have Orange logos all over them??
The Lumia looks nice. Isn't that limited to the internal memory of 8gb?? I would consider it anyway and will have a look later on.
The Ascend looks nice, but seems t o be about 150. I am tempted to go direct to one of the Chinese websites and buy a smart phone and see what it is like, but it is always hit and miss and I am trying to stop bargain hunting in that way.0 -
If you can stretch to £130 there's always the Huawei G510 at £130 from Vodafone (can be unlocked easily via £3 code off ebay). Stunning spec for the price but not really compact?

Which Ascend phone is £150? The W1 Windows phone is £99.99 at 02.

they seem to like it!

These "branded" PAYG phones can be amazing value when they are on sale. You are certainly not tied to Orange or T-mobile - you just need to unlock the phone and then you can pop whatever sim you want in it.
You can often unlock these phones yourself and many of the rest can be unlocked for a fiver on ebay. You can also root the phone and change the operating system to get rid of Orange or T-mobile bloatware.
The phone itself may have a logo on it, but if you are getting a good phone very cheap, does that really matter?0 -
AFAIAA the San Diego can only be unlocked by Orange and they won't do that until you have been with them for at least 3 months. Anyone confirm?0
