Had a look on Debenhams, following the comment above and these look nice:
    http://www.debenhams.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Navigate?sfv=Skirted&ps=max&catalogId=10001&lid=%2F%2Fproductsuniverse%2Fen_GB%2Fproduct_online%3DY%2Finsearch%3D1%2Fcategories%3C%7Bproductsuniverse_18661%7D%2Fcategories%3C%7Bproductsuniverse_18661_17728%7D%2Fcategories%3C%7Bproductsuniverse_18661_17728_84612_ms%7D%2Fcut%3E%7Bskirted%7D&langId=-1&sfn=STYLE&storeId=10701&pn=1

You could always order a couple and try them on at home. I think some of them are quite nice and anything that makes you feel more comfortable is a good idea. But really I wouldn't worry, you see all shapes and sizes on the beach and no-one bats an eyelid.

NB I prefer a skirt to a sarong for a cover up, as I'm never convinced that the sarong is going to stay put or cover up the bits I want it to, where as a nice cotton skirt is fool proof.

remember that when you order and try on at home EVERYTHING looks horrendous. that's just our own image of ourselves.

it doesn't really look horrendous but we are so self conscious and embarrassed that it feels that way.

find something that you feel comfortable in and I really hope you have a fantastic healing time with your family x

Wear a swimsuit with a sarong and you'll look like every other woman wearing them. Wear a swimdress or a kneesuit and people will look at you and wonder what on earth you're wearing.
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

Yes I'd definitely wear a swimdress if only I could find one that fitted me properly. The ones I've tried on just don't do it for me .... I've got one of these http://www.sportsdirect.com/slazenger-boyleg-swimming-suit-girls-353080 I just can't (soz if too much info) stand shaving the pubes.

I've tried the Debenhams one & they come really small.

thanks guys for your opinions and ideas. im going to have alook at all of your suggestions but I think you're mostly right about drawing more attention with the dress. I'll try a couple on and maybe look at marks and debenhams for a bettr shaped cossie and find a nice sarong and make my decision.

thanks for the kjnd words too . it helps

    x

Oh, I have been there too. I still am there but care less as I get older, LOL. Thinking about it though, it really isn't worth worrying about what other people are thinking as they too will be feeling insecure, too thin, too fat, too many varicose veins, you name it. I am 61 now but even as recently as last year I fretted about how I would look in my costume but there is always someone thinner, fatter etc. and you mustn't let it spoil your enjoyment.

Another way I look at things these days is that I will probably never see the other people again as long as I live. The people I am with on holiday have seen it all before and they don't care.

I just wish I had seen the light years ago.

Instead of a swim dress could you get a tankini top and pair it with some swim shorts

    Something like these

    whitesatin that's exactly it.

you will never see these people ever again.

I always imagine in my head they don't know me. they don't know that I haven't just lost 5 stone and actually at a size 18 I look pretty amazing. lol.

just imagine that and you'll feel great.

my lovely family who I holiday with all know im a little bit on the chubby side and they love me just as I am so im not going to worry about perfect strangers having a look at my wobbly bits x

There seems to be a lot of swimdresses around this year. I have one (I'm 32) but don't wear it that often because mainly here I'm in the pool for water aerobics and swimming and the skirt bit can get annoying when you're swimming. But for sunbathing and messing about in the pool, it does cover more and makes me feel more confident.
Of course you could wear a swim skirt over a normal cossie. I think Bon Marche sell them. Try Evans or Yours if they don't.
And believe me, people will be more concerned about what they look like, not what other people look like. It's the people who desperately try and cover themselves up with a towel that draw more attention than the ones who just get on with things. Have a fab holiday!
