Help! non traditional wedding dress

Hello all,
I'll introduce myself - I recently got engaged to my partner of 9 years (on our anniversary actually!). Am very excited and we're currently looking at venues, think it will be a city centre wedding in a registry office followed by a small restaurant or hotel reception. Food and a disco, informal and relaxed hopefully. About 60 guests, I think this is a lot of people but am told this is a small wedding!!! And in October or November 2013, yes this year
Now the problem I’m having is thinking about a weddingdress. I really don’t want to go downthe ‘big white dress’ route. So I’mthinking about a different colour, maybe green or blue as I like those coloursand they suit me. And I was thinkingshort, maybe 50s style, but then a friend told me that wouldn’t suit me (I’mquite tall) and I should go for 20s/30s style instead, long and flowy. But I’m concerned this might be a bit toomuch for a city centre, informal wedding! Also, I’m a bit worried I won’t look very ‘bridal’ if I don’t go for thewhite dress, and I might feel I’m missing out. So many thoughts going round in my head! I know I need to get myself down the shops J Another consideration is a relatively shorttime frame so might not have time for ordering the traditional wedding dress. So high street or online... much better forthe budget as well.
Help! Any otherbrides considering non traditional? Didyou still feel bridal? How can I lookbridal without the white dress (don’t want to be mistaken for a wedding guest)! I like wearing quite unusual styles, vintageclothes and bright colours but will I regret it if I don’t go for the whitepuffy dress??

I said I wasn't going to have a proper bridal gown (been there done that before) but then I got thinking...I still want to look like a bride...so I started surfing for ideas and decided -forget puffy, forget train - look for evening dress style in either tea length or full length. The dress I chose is in my Vegas wedding thread.
Definitely no veil -maybe flowers in my hair - but understated bridal is my aim.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

That's a really pretty dress Duchy. I like your term 'understated bridal!'
I also have a bit of a pride thing I don't know if I need to get over - before we got engaged I swore to my boyfriend that I'd never wear a white dress - now I'm looking for dresses I don't want to look for white or I will have to eat my words!0 -
Hi
youre really lucky that youre tall and loads of styles would look good on you
Have you looked at Monsoon bridal dresses. or their occasion wear
They have some lovely styles that are a bit different from the usual standard wedding gown and would look lovely understated with flowers in the hair like the poster above suggested.

I chose a shell pink dress for my wedding and I guess at the time that was "not expected".
Personally you should go with what you like and what you want...ive been to some lovely second weddings where the bride has gone white and a lovely one recently where she opted for navy blue and looked absolutley stunning.
dont worry in the slightest about being mistaken for a guest...you will be the one radiating such a happiness that wont be matched by anyone...frugal October...£41.82 of £40 food shopping spend for the 2 of us!

I hadn't thought of Monsoon, thanks! They have some gorgeous stuff and some of the dresses on the website are lovely. And liking the idea of navy now...
Lejc that was a lovely thing to say, thank you.0 -

Thank you -it's from Kiss dresses (nice range of dresses and very reasonable even new)........ and "ivory" or "cream" isn't white....so you're not *really* breaking your wordI Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

supersmith, what about black and white? I tried on 3 dresses that were white or off white with black accents on them. They looked stunning. I also saw quite a few that were a very pale (blush?) pink, they are stunning too.Debt free (if you don't count the mortgage!)0

My husband to be (ooh got all giddy typing that) is INCREDIBLY logical so that would be a great argument to use

Black and white is a good idea. I did see one dress ages ago online that was black and white stripes, really wide horizontal ones! It did have the wow factor but I didn't know if stripes were very 'weddingy'0
