We had our Lab microchipped when she had her second lot of injections, so around 10 weeks. When she was chipped she made more fuss about having her claws clipped than having the microchip done!
She is being spayed in a few weeks time and she will be just over a year old and has had a season.

I know that micro chipping helps but it wont help if he is lost.

You're right, but it's certainly going to be more helpful than no chip at all. Even a lost dog may resurface in a different town, or be found by someone other than yourself, and the chip will help you get reunited. Yet, a tracking device may be more helpful (you can actually get GPS collars for dogs, though I'm not sure of the battery life, if they're intended more just to use on walks than 24/7) but something is better than nothing.

I'd be going for the microchipping as soon as poss. As said above it's quick & doesn't hurt anymore than any other injection, I'm puzzled as to why your vet said different?

IMO spaying at 6 months is too early, she's still a puppy & needs to mature properly. I'd wait until she was 12 months at least.

Agree with this. Any vet we've ever taken our dogs to have always recommended waiting at least until they (!!!!!es) have had their first season.

Given the timeframe of their first season and that you have to wait until a few months after (for swelling etc to go down), 12 months sounds a safe bet.

I also agree with the comments about microchipping. Perhaps the vet meant that it can be stressful for the dog since they dont know whats going on? I've yet to meet a dog who liked being at the vets - although I daresay they do exist.....somewhere lol.

Heck our wee one.....vet hadnt even touched her and she started yelping like she was in severe pain. She had to get knocked out. Even 6 years on, whoever takes her to the vets is "bad" for the rest of the day and she'll ignore them/turn her back on them :rotfl:

Whoever said dogs dont have emotions has never owned a dog.

We had Rosie done when she was spayed at 6 months. She has a thermoscan chip so they can read her temp when needed rather than the other way, was the same price as a normal one but the chip was larger so the vet recommended doing it under a general.

Yep, mine loves the vets lol despite numerous injections & anal gland emptying plus 2 operations, weird animal!

My Lab still gets crazy excited for the vets, she does the worst 'sick dog' impression ever! As soon as we get there she is bouncing around like a kangaroo, think she remembers that she always gets a treat before she leaves!

None of my 3 greyhounds seemed bothered when getting microchipped, Hattie was done twice too as the chip slipped out with the needle on the first go and that was a thermochip, Although from experience they never bother to use it to get temperature as during our blood donations just take from the ear or the old fashioned method, think vet said chip temp can be unreliable as its closer to the surface.

Out of three Staffies, one GSD, a Tibetan Mastiff, and four cats, the only one who didn't bawl their heads off was my newest kitten Mungo, he barely noticed, but he is terribly thick :D
