I know that micro chipping helps but it wont help if he is lost. I know that this is going to sound really strange but we also have two little / well not so little anymore rescue kitchens and two years ago Oscar disappeared for 10 days.

We where besides ourselves. I was at the time convinced that the micro chip must be able to be tracked or something like that. No such luck. In the end we knocked on every door and walked up and down every street. He finally returned in a terrible state. The vet said that he must have been locked in some where, was dehydrated and had lost a lot of weight.

He is fine now but sorry the point is that micro chipping only helps if your puppy is found, taken to a vet etc and scanned.

I am not a techo expert but why can they not take it a stage further and have some sort of tracking system?

Sorry said it was going to sound strange. I will still get Charlie chipped, don't know how I would cope if he disappeared so i suppose we would just have to hope that who ever found he took him to the vets, rspca etc.

Our vet also wanted to spay and microchip Poppy at 6 months. In the end we took her to our local RSPCA who chipped her for £10 and she is booked in for her spay in a couple of weeks. She has had one season and is just over 12 months old.

The member of staff at the RSPCA suggested that we wait outside the room when she was chipped as she might cry out but she was fine. It is a large needle though!

Thanks for all the replies. Pretty much what we already thought tbh. Get the microchipping done and wait for spaying.

BJV - I suppose you can't guarantee that microchipping in the circumstance that happened with your poor little Oscar will make any difference. Glad he was found OK.

On another note - what actually happens during their first 'season'? I know I could google it (and probably will) but nothing beats first hand experience by doggy owners.

I'd microchip earlier, she's a decent size and it shouldn't hurt too much. I've got some small dogs and wait until they get spayed because a chip in a small dog is obviously bigger to them!

Persoanlly, I spay before the first season, there's pros and cons to it. Part of the decision is because there are entire dogs in our house as well and I don't want any mishaps!

My springer was microchipped last week when he had his kennel cough treatement at 11 weeks.

She'll be in heat for approx 3 weeks, but some go longer, she will bleed a bit at first, some dogs are very clean and you will never notice as they keep themselves clean, others you may notice spots of blood so you might want to get her some pants ( I kid you not ) you can get one specifically for dogs, Equafleece do really good comfy ones, or you can modify a pair of human under crackers , and use a Tena pad.
Once the bleeding is over, your dog will still be in heat, and this is in fact the danger part as she will now be receptive and could become pregnant if caught.

Jazz had a little mini period. I think that Celli has got it spot on.

& Lee111s how are you getting on with your springer.

This is my first springer and I am loving it. Charlie is nearly six months old and is fab. Bike rides, beach, park you name it he even runs to the door to get this harness now when he knows it walk time. Which for Charlie means at least twice a day. That said i feel so much better for it. No chance of me being a coach potato now!

He's doing really well BJV. He's just over 11 weeks now and is fully house trained (has been for a few weeks really). Sleeps on his own in his crate with no bother and has mastered sit, down and paw! Recall is coming on but he still finds the grass out on walks more interesting than me! Biting is now almost none existant which is great.

I made a thread earlier today as he's had to go for an operation this morning to have his tail amputated as he's been biting it due to contracting juvenile impetigo. His tail got infected and we can't stop him biting it despite bandages/hard plastic over the end of the tail, e-collar and bitter apple spray!

He'll b all the better for it I'm sure and can't wait to get him to his second puppy class next week. He's quite timid around other dogs but I expect him to come out of his shell in the coming weeks. He still has his holligan half hour in the house/garden every day, even with two 15 minute off lead walks!

Aw, sounds like you're both having fun with your pups! Can't wait to get ours. Our first family dog. Kids are both teenagers so can help out as well.
