Ailuro, that is one of the good things about this dog. Yes she's an old GS, but she was bought because she had the best hip score etc they could get. They paid a lot of money for her because of that, she was bought to mate with the best male stud they could get as they wanted the best puppies. 4 figures IIRC they also travelled to Ireland to get her this was 10 years ago it was done so would have been more money now of course. Her value was for breeding and is no longer worth that of course, I think her pups went for about the same if not more (she had more !!!!!es than dogs in first litter). She isn't prone to those problems, I am not saying won't have but she's showing no signs so far
See this is why I am not put off by getting her, many would say steer clear but I know her history up to a certain point. My only concern at the minute is overweight as this can bring on hip issues.
What we've decided to do, her 9 days is up before we go away, her 14 days after that that they keep them for is the day after we get back. When the kennels ring in 9 days will say look we're going away, I don't want to bring her back, then unsettle her again in boarding, if someone offers a suitable caring home before we get back, great, if not we'll come up that day and see how she is with our dogs etc. I have made sure the kennels are aware of her breeding etc, I wish I could source all her KC paperwork etc, this may help her get a home.
It's not ideal for us taking another dog on, with time and costs etc, we can do it without struggling but that of course isn't the point. I would rather she was able to retire and enjoy her old age one to one with someone, but if she doesn't get offered that then there is no way I will see her spend her last days in a damp kennel.
I am still trying to get a response from breed rescues, downside is they are all far from us.One day I might be more organised...........

Little update, Megan's 9 days is now up, we got a call from the kennels and I explained to them about the hols situation etc have said if she doesn't find a home before we get back we'll come and see her with my 2 other dogs and go from there. On finding her paperwork I now know she was 10 last month.
If anyone wants a GSD (female dog) to rehome in the North East please let me know and I will gladly pass on the information. One day I might be more organised...........

Well we returned off holiday on Friday night and called the Rescue Centre this morning. When they answered they said she'd gone. What had happened was wires crossed they thought we would call last week and we'd said we'd call on the Monday. We didn't want to rehome her then have to put her back in kennels within days. Anyway she was due to be put to sleep on Tuesday so we went straight there.
Thankfully she'd been sent to a kennels in Nottingham not put to sleep thankfully! After several calls they managed to find where she is and the lady from the kennels is going to collect her when she drops some other dogs off in the middle of the week.
So Megan is coming home some time this week, downside is if she gets on straight away with our 2 or not we'll just have to sort something out seeing as they are going to this effort to bring her home, so any top tips on rehoming oldies with others etc welcome. To say my partner is relieved is an understatement as we thought she'd been destroyed
After looking through her old paperwork we'd kept she was actually 10 in May. Old girl but still has a lot of energy and is very affectionate. One day I might be more organised...........

Your post made me tingly.
I hope it all goes smoothly when she comes back home.0 -
I'll look into that sav4it, downside being most friends are also dog owners, but will ask around. I was thinking of taking the others out when we bring her back, let her have a look round etc before they come in then start off in the garden.
Thanks for the messages, it's been a very emotional time, most of it seems like a weird dream, I'm sure all will become very real when we get her home. Just a waiting game now, waiting for the phone call to say she's back in the North EastOne day I might be more organised...........

Firstly, good for you for taking on this dog when she needs you most. :T:T
Thinking ahead and thinking on the dog's level - how would your other two react if they found a strange dog in the house/garden? If they are usually pretty friendlywith other dogs they come across then it could all go well. If you can try introducing them somewhere a bit more neutral. If it's in your garden don't let things become too intense at first. Maybe a game of 'fetch' with a new toy that doesn't belong to (ie have any scent of) any of the dogs.
Eventually the dogs will settle and Newbie will find her own level in the pecking order.
The very best of luck. Keep us updated with how it goes.

My 2 are fine if another dog comes into the garden, this happens a lot as we have a field behind my house regularly used by dog walkers and when the gates open they just wander in to play :rotfl: same with neighbours sons dogs when they come over they sneak under the fence (some sort of mini terrier and they fit through) and my dogs are never agressive etc with them. When it comes to the house, when I brought the youngest home it was a rush as she'd been badly treated, had no chance to plan etc, oldest dog was great with her.
Will ask at the rescue about doing intros up there slowly, they have been very helpful so far (inc going back to Nottingham which is hundreds of miles away) to bring her back. I also want to see what she is like with our children aswell, I don't know who she's been with or where for a while and don't know what she is like with children any more. There was a young girl about the same age as my son helping at the kennels and they said she was fine with them.
Just waiting for the call now, have put a new easy clean flooring down where they sleep, this I suppose might help with the removing smells etc.
New toys on shopping list, bowl, lead, best wait for collar just incase with size etc. Have updated my info on the petlog register so this time they won't have to call other people to find us if she goes missing. One day I might be more organised...........

IF you do get her, you need to get a cage for her.
You will be introducing a new adult dog to an established pack. Even though your dogs are fine with other dogs, this is a dog coming into their home and it will cause problems if not handled correctly.
You need the cage to give her somewhere to go, and so your an get to go out in the first few weeks without the fear of a fight breaking out when you are not there. Simply putting them in different rooms is cheaper, but can take a lot longer and has its own problems.
When you are at home with all the dogs, they should be together. Keep collars on ALL dogs (to break up fights) and be prepared to step in when needed, but remember that there has to be a few scuffles to establish who's who.
Feed them all well apart from each other. Give treats and attention equally, but do not treat the new dog more or less that the others.
good luck.

Got a call at 4pm the lady from the rescue is on her way up with her now, we have to meet her at the services at about 6pm. Downside is no time for calmer intros, she can't get her to the rescue up here before they close, so keep your fingers crossed it's not fight night tonight. Also have nothing for her so will be a detour to pets at home as it's the only shop open so late, need collar, bowl, etc etc
I can't get a cage this short notice but have planned on having the other room there if need to seperate them. Might be able to get one tomorrow if we need it but someone will be in with them all the time tonight anyway, someone I know sells them as a supplier but he's closed now, darn it. Will get her a collar tonight, the others have them already. We didn't expect her to get here so fast, but plans have changed on transport etc, so it's either now or never for the old girl.
Thanks for the messages, need all the luck we can getOne day I might be more organised...........
