    Hi guys!

We do have a week off just after kids go back to school, depending on if my eldest is authorised holiday leave as I hear her new shcool is getting stricter on time off for holidays (currently up to 10 days if attendance is good).

Most schools have this 10 day policy but beware, my daughters school state that this 10 days is not for holidays. Your daughters absence might not be authorised, especially so soon after the 6 week holidays. Is she due to start this school in Sept or is she already there ?

No, I have asked the school (she starts there in Sept)- they said at the moment they can authorise up to 10 days even for holidays if attendance is good but she seemed to think this is changing next academic year and is going to get back to me... so Sept is a bit of a grey area at the mo until she gives me an answer as i am not willing to take her out of school otherwise. x

If it were me, i wouldn't even consider taking my daughter out of school for her first week in a new school.

    Oh well, that's because I am a sh*te mum, clearly :)

( I did type a post justifying myself then realised that actually I don't have to and that this isn't a parenting forum).

If you're going to take your kid out for a week, do it next to a half term or end of term, the first week is a really bad idea! I would have hated to miss that. The school is a lot less likely to authorise that too.

I found a family hotel in Ibiza for £570 for 5 nights AI with good reviews on the food, in the second week of August, just yesterday. Or there were self catering /b&b options for around £350-450 each.

Hi. i take my DD out for two days roughly,- occasionally three tagged on to a bank hol or training day in the May half term. Her attendance otherwise is excellent, as are her grades/results.
TBH though, i would not take her out at the beginning of a school term,- particularly if she was just starting high school. She would not want to miss the first week of a new school term anyway!

It can be really disorientating and scary enough, going from primary to Secondary school, and so much happens in the first week, as everything is new. it took my DD the first week to find her way around the school, and get used to being on time for lessons, as they were very spaced out across two main buildings.

I'm not criticising at all. As i said i do take her out for the odd couple of days,- but i choose those days carefully, and ultimately make sure they have as little impact on her as possible.

I've taken my kids out of school loads of times, my son for 6 weeks when we went to Australia and my daughter 3 weeks to go to Florida 4 years ago.

No-one is asking you to justify yourself, it's your child after all. Don't think it will be viewed in a positive light by the school though.

we went on a cheap August last minute AI to Calella a few years ago and it was a nightmare, think I paid around £100 for the 3 of us. It was a 4* hotel and is still marketed as such, IMO is wasnt as food awful etc but it did have 2 pools 2 bars etc so think some of the * rating was due to facilities not quality

I dont know where in the country you are but a couple of people I know go to Southport Pontins with National Holiday Half Board for about £130 each and cheaper for children. They said plenty to do and plenty of food that is edible, this may be a cheaper option if you are happy with this type of holiday.

Or what about a weekend away in August and a holiday at October half term even if your son has a couple of days off school for the flights, some parts of Turkey, Canaries etc are still warm then and will be cheaper than August.

We live in the North of England but I have sometimes flown from Scotland as is cheaper if not their school hols
