Wizwoo has mentioned the sites my sis recommended to me , but she also told me about ffhs.org.uk and genuki.org.uk

She's recommended some others in an e mail to me , but for some reason I can't read the left hand side of her e mail so don't know what they are

You could look up the land registry records - but I think you would have to pay for that. Or check out the census for 1901 - although that would be a long time before. The 1911 census wouldn't be released until 2011 (I think).

  • Hi!
I've been tracing my tree on and off for 15 years and there's still lots to do! :-) In terms of doing it cheaply...

I don't know how far you've got - if you are just starting out get as much info from your family, talk to them and take notes, borrow old photos, documents, letters whatever. This shouldn't cost you anything except phone bills and gym membership to work off the cakes and biscuits you were given while being told this stuff. Scan the photos and old documentation in so it's recorded for posterity.

Also get a genealogy program, PAF (Personal Ancestry File?) is free from https://www.familysearch.org. I personally use Family Historian, however it is not free.

Once you've collated the info you've collected in your genealogy program (remember to record your sources - you will come across info that is misleading or just plain wrong, so when you've got conflicting info, if you know where it came from you may be able to work out which is the good.)

More and more info is appearing online.

Free and useful sites are :-

https://www.freebmd.org.uk - most birth, marriage and death indexes
    https://www.familysearch.org - 1881 census and the IGI
https://www.genuki.org.uk - details of sources and their locations

Assuming your family originate from where you live now your main library (failing that the county record office) should have census entries on microfilm and with a bit of luck indexes for the period 1841 to 1901. Otherwise if you live in London this is all in the Family Records centre.

Another place to go is your local mormon church, (details from family search above), which have local resources on microfilm and can order microfilms nationally for a nominal fee (£3 or so).

Ancestry is busy making the census available, which is dead useful - but it's a pay site. I believe they do free trials but there are lots of stories about difficulties cancelling the trial before you get charged. Depending upon what your ancestors got up to then there may be some info in the public records office at Kew. Free to use and visiting the place really is an experience. :-)

Good luck and have fun! :-)

Does anyone know what information i need to obtain a marriage certificate.

I know the town, who got married, the month and the year but not the date.

Is this enough information or do i need to find a date?

    Yes ,
I've applied and received marriage certificates
when I've only known the grooms full name, brides first name
    town and year.

    Hi!
It depends who you're getting the certificate from. If it's from the local (usually town hall based) registrar then that info should be sufficient. (Details of the appropriate person to talk to should be on Genuki (https://www.genuki.org.uk))

If you're sending off to the Office of National Statistics / Central Registrar he will want to know the index number and registration district of the certicate you're after. If you don't know this info you'll be charged more for them to do the search first.

The index number / registration district can be found (if you are lucky) on FreeBMD (https://www.freebmd.org.uk.) Alternatively there are loads of (pay) sites which will give you access to those indexes, they're at the family records centre and some county records offices have them.

    Regards
