  • I do know that if you go the the daily telegraph site first and link from https://www.telegraph.co.uk/familyhistory and click on the ancestry.co.uk link there, You will have access to view the original images of the 1901 census. Its great.

  • Hi Folks

Is anyone out there doing a family history research and found ways to save money?

Most of the sites charge you for any additional information, birth certificate searches and so on.

I’m new to tracing my family roots and would love to hear from anyone who has had success in saving money and getting around the normal parting with money sites to find further information.

    Any clues appreciated.

I think a lot depends whether your family originate close to where you live or not, and how much you can find out from local family history centres. Personally I would recommend you join Genes Reunited. It is about £7 a year. I have made contact with a lot of people who I am related to and most of these are more than happy to share what they have discovered re the family. One person sent me lots of photocopies of certificates and wills that would have cost me several hundreds of pounds to research and obtain myself. It is also worth having a look at websites such as https://www.familysearch.org which are free to use. Once you get back further than the start of the twentieth century it can be invaluable. There is also another site http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers.htm#Page which will search the same info but you can limit it down to a certain county, town or parish. But my chief tip is to talk to the older members of the family before you do anything, they may well give you little titbits of info that could prove invaluable. I always thought my mother's family came from London, but she told me they were actually born in Gloucestershire, this saved me time and money looking for stuff in the wrong place.

https://www.freebmd.org.uk is pretty good and free! Also ancestry is free to search and you only have to pay to see original records.
  • If it's recent family you're after, GenesReunited and Ancestry are the way to go. FreeBMD has potential but it's not complete by any stretch of the info. A Google will also bring stuff up once you have a name; there are lots of sites out there dedicated to single surnames and their variants.

If you're starting with anyone alive in 1901, then you'll need the 1901 Census - I use Ancestry for this but there be some free sites out there with it on.

Good luck - I started family research a few years ago and now have many lines going back 1000 years and more.

our local library had an 'open morning' when you got an hour with an expert, and they have someone go there every week that you can book up with, I think he is a local amateur who is happy to share his time. when I went they had access to Ancestry. also get a good basic book - from the library - to get an idea of where you will search first.

good tip before you spend any money is to ask all the family members for any info they have, and if anyone has started doing any research already.

when you buy credits and use them to view different things, make a note of what you have viewed to save looking up again and wasting credits.

ask for money for credits/membership for birthday/easter?

    BIG WARNING - its addictive!
