our dog used to run franitcally around the house howling when were went out and left her, we now lock her in the hallway, this has worked really really well, so maybe putting them into a smaller room might work?

    Have a look at this.

    bark trainer collar

It works on the same principal as the barkbuster thing. It's £14.95 inc VAT plus delivery, but you might be able to find something in a pet supermarket.

"Persistent barking can be annoying for both owners and neighbours alike. This sound sensitive device fits securely arond your pets neck. Each time your dog persistently barks it emits a high pitched pulse, irritating to your pet.

Your dog will soon associate barking with this unpleasant sound which should reduce the barking or even eliminate it all together.

Can I stress that it's not one of those collars that give the dog an electric shock when it barks. It just annoys it.

My brother's dog was successfully trained to stop barking with a collar that sent a small spray of water towards his neck/face whenever he barked.

    Good Luck :)

You cannot live as I have lived an not end up like me.

Oi you lot - please :heart:GIVE BLOOD  - you never know when you and yours might need it back! 67 pints so far.

your dog is stressed and worried hence the howling and barking - please speak to your vet or a behaviourist about how to deal with separation anxiety so that your dog is happy to let you go out of the house and comfortable in his/her own environment. It's not easy to give general advice on separation anxiety as every dog is different so it's much better to get one to one advice but if you can't afford it then go onto some of the dog sites and take a look at taking the lead for information - there are many behaviourists who will give advice online specific to your situation.

Leaving the radio on etc only works if the dog understands it as a sign that you're coming back otherwise it means nothing to them.

Good advice from Justie. When we first rescued our weimy (he was 2 years old) we worried about leaving him alone as weimaraners dont like to be left alone. We treat him like a puppy and started just leaving him for a few minutes at a time, always stuck to the same routine, I would walk out the door and say 'I wont be long' and either give him a bonio or chuck some biscuits on the floor for him to eat. When I came home, I would walk straight past him, ignoring his excitment at me returning, take off my coat and shoes, walk into the kitchen and get him another biscuit. I gradually built up the time over a few weeks. He soon learnt to associate the words and actions with something good happening not something bad (hes a very greedy dog) He still hates to be left, and to be honest he is only left for an hour at the most, but theres no howling or crying, as hes usually left with something to occuppy him, a kong, buster cube or this tyre toy we put biscuits and he throws it about and catches the biccies. I also leave a tv or radio on in one of the kids bedrooms and close the door, to try to con him into thinking theres someone in there :rotfl: dont know if he falls for it though.
Good luck, I hope you can get this sorted, for your dogs sake as much as your neighbours.

Could you get a dog sitter in or take him to someones house every day? Dogs shouldnt really be left for long periods on their own.

Maybe you should think about rehoming them then. If you can't give them the attention they need they would be a lot happier if you did.

i have had them for 9 years well 1 9 and other 7.i treat my dogs very well when im home but like most people i have other things to do in the day as well as walk them.
i think most people have children (just as a sweeping statement!) that have dogs,so unfortunatly for me its just one of my dogs that has the problem.

thanks for your advice but thats not what im looking to do

  • Hi

I am also going through the same problem, We have two dogs one 7 and one 5. The one that is 7 is the dog that is doing the barking. He has been doing it for a while now but gets better for a few weeks then is the same again. We have also had the neighbours saying about the noise when we go out and its getting quite bad. We have tried all the bark collars ( they are not cheap) the one cost neally £80. But things we have tried
    - Spary collar - its gives the dos a little spary when the dog barks - Our dog was not bothered by this when we got home it was always empty
    - Shock collar- Gives the dog a little shock when they bark - Again this didnt work and people have mixed feelings about this one. It was expensive we sold it again.

    - Kongs-you fill these will different things we use marmite and peanut butter and then put other treats in and the dog spends time licking the filling out. These can be brought from most pet stores about £8 for the big one.
-We also have a crate which we put him in on a night which he doesnt mind but he brakes out of it if we put him in it when we go out.

We have also tried sitting in the house messing with the keys and with our coats on so he gets used to it.
We have read sooo many webiste about different things to try leaving the radio on or TV when you go out also, Some are so silly leaving the dog with a sitter or taking it with you most of the time its not possible.

Well now we are looking into a behaviourist and we are going to talk to the vets but its all expensive but as its something we have not tried yet. I hope this has helped and a good place to look for bark control which isnt too expensive is Ebay. We have sold things on there that havent worked.

What type of dog is it? And does he make and damage when you are out at all? and Where do u keep them?

All the best a very stressed Jodie
