dog howling when we are out

i have 2 dogs aged 9 and 7 and the 9 year old has always howled when we go out or barks but mainly makes a load howling noise when we go out
i have always had this problem but up until a few monthst ago i didnt go out as much as i do now,i dont leave them longer than a few hours though, when i do i have left big bones etc to chew and also left tv radio on not worked.
anyway neighbour has mentioned a few times now how bad the problem is and that it is waking her up in the morning and when we go out is very annoying(she is being very good about it,we get on really well).
also went away this weekend and by brother was minding the house but he must have gone out because neighbour over the road said it had woken her baby up at 1 in morning.
its quite worring for me now as this keeps cropping up in conversersations when im out the front chatting,i understand how annoying this must be.I try to be as fast as i can to do my shopping, but its atually stopping me from going out to friends etc as i dont want to desturb.
oh also its just the older dog that does it but after a while other dog starts too, must think if you can beat em,ill join em!!
any help greatfully recieved.

Where do you leave your dogs when you go out? if they can see through a window or are close to a door that can often trigger howling when they hear something they can't see or see something they can't get
I had this problem with one of my dogs when she was a puppy so I bought a dog crate for her to sleep in, and left one of my (worn) t shirts with her and a hot water bottle when I left her and that seemed to ease the situation
I don;t know if your dogs are used to being left in a crate but it is the best thing I ever did for my dogs as they are secure and they have their own "safe" place
The only other thing I can suggest you do is if you are just going on a short trip and its not hot outside is to take dogs with you in the car, and if you are going out overnight put them into boardingI am a Mortgage Adviser

Could you leave a radio set to a speech station on in the background? I usually do that when I go out. I also leave the TV on sometimes instead. My guys have the run of downstairs, but I shut the living room curtains at the front so they don't bark at passers by
We were lent some sort of anti barking device when we rescued our most recent addition. Can't remember what it was called (helpfulsorry) as we didn't actually need to use it. It worked on the principle that whenever the dog barked the device made a high pitched buzzing sound to distract the dog.

Good for you for caring enough about your neighbours feelings to do something about it.
Our next door neighbours dog used to bark and howl all day long - neighbour didnt care a bit. We moved house in the end...:mad:0 -

I don't really have any suggestions but I just wanted to say that when my neighbours dog started to howl I found it unbelievably distressing... he has only done it a couple of times in 8yrs but I can't imagine what it must be like if it happens on a regular basis...#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j
