Yes I meant connect the incoming cable in the hall to the one going to the lounge then replace the blanking plate. The one in the lounge will then become the master NTE once moved from the kitchen. The Openreach chap(ess) will then just put their faceplate on the NTE in the lounge and smile because it was an easy job.

This is basically what I did for a friend of mine who was suffering the same as you when fibre was due to be installed.
You will get people who say it is illegal to touch the NTE but yours has already been moved from the hall into the kitchen.

You could ask openreach to do as I suggest or attempt it your self if you have basic DIY skills. Make sure you log all of the colours and where they go.

Am happy to make the changes myself, but if I disconnect the existing master socket and wire in the extension to the lounge directly to the cable coming into the house instead, wont the openreach person think this is a bit strange and ask why the master socket is disconnected?

Also (from previous replies) I was under the impression that openreach wont touch 'self installed' wiring so doesn't that make the extension to the lounge null and void anyway?

Anyway, first I need to check what sort of cable has been used when I get home this evening.

If you want the NTE faceplate in the lounge you'll have to run cat5 there regardless.

Personally I'd do it all myself, tell the OR engineer the master socket is in the lounge and let him get on with it.

I can't really see them running wires from the hall to the lounge for you, hiding them as he goes. Unless you get an exceptionally helpful chap(ess) with a bit of spare time on their hands.

Maybe I am not explaining it clearly but if the NTE is in the lounge then this is fine with me as I can then connect my router next to the openreach modem (via cat5) and connect up all the equipment from there.

If openreach put the NTE in the hallway (aside from there being no power for their modem) I would then have to run cat5 cable from the hall to the lounge from there myself.

Unless you mean change the wiring behind the blank face place and move the master socket from the kitchen to the lounge all before they turn up on Friday so I can say there it is?

Or, lets say they insist on putting a NTE on the faceplate in the hall regardless, could I not just disconnect that, wire in the extension to the lounge again then put the faceplate on the end of that instead.

Putting aside the 'dont touch the Openreach NTE mutterings' its just crimping some cables after all?

I'll tell you what, you're not doing my stress levels any good.

I was told they would require two power sockets but didn't make any further comment. At a great deal of trouble, I managed 3 yrs ago, to find a 6 mtre extension cable with four gangs/sockets.

My belief is that this is going to be OK. One will be for phone, one for laptop, the other two for modem & router.

I have asked all members of my family if they have power sockets close to phone socket and not one has.

    Sorry about that :)

I have a power socket in the lounge with an 8 gang adaptor off it so plenty of free space for power for both the openreach modem and the sky router *if* the master socket can be relocated there.

My other plan is to ask if they could just run the cable from the entry point at the front of the house under the garage door (the door is flush against the side wall but there is a gap under it), then in through the lounge that way.

Would be a shorter run than going round the right hand side of the house and avoids messing about with internal wiring.

Yes that is what I have been saying.
The NTE master socket will be in the Lounge, the openreach chap will only need to go in the kitchen to drink your tea.

When he enters your house you take him to the lounge where he sees the master socket, as long as everything is working OK, and you will test that when you rewire, he will have no need to check any wiring.
It will be a very easy job for him as only need to replace the face plate and fix his modem to the wall.

Yep, I get you :) I will need to cut a hole in the fall, find a backplate, etc before they arrive on Friday then.

From googling this may also be an option if they insist on using the one in the kitchen and I can then use the existing extensions that are in place:

Not too sure if you intend to do the work yourself, but if you do then the NTE in the kitchen is a surface mounted one so all you would do is take that off the wall and screw it back on the lounge wall and connect the cable that currently feeds the existing extension.
That will become the master NTE when you rewire under the blanking plate in the hall.
Cannot see why you would want to cut a hole in the (f)wall.

Just to give you a bit of confidence 2 weeks ago I did something similar. My NTE was in the garage where the underground feed came in, I wanted it in the house so I could plug the router in directly.
So I put a connecting block in the garage, ran some telephone cable from that into the front bedroom where I fitted the NTE from the garage. I also fitted an ADSL nation face plate to the NTE.

Ah yes, so it is. That makes it even easier.

I didnt check the wiring on the extension yesterday but I will do that this evening to see what cable has been used.

Its not a big job, the main caveats I have found are are dont touch the copper wires and don't let the wires touch as they have power - oh and deny all knowledge ;)

I can probably get hold of a krone tool from work as well.
