  • Hi everyone, customers who are on this energy online jan 14 tariff are been sent letters to advise them of the increase from the 1st July. If you remember, Npower announced a price change back in November 2012 and the tariff in question wasn't affected. An early exit fee of £30.00 may apply per fuel if you change tariff or provider before the 31st Jan 2014. If you gave them notice that you wanna change, a price hold can be applied until they receive notification from the new supplier meaning you will pay your current prices until the transfer is complete, hope this helps :)

did you get this in writing? or was it just a verbal confirmation over the phone, if you switched online to a diffrent provider before jan 14 wouldnt npower just add the charges once the move is complete for leaving before jan 14.

or did you ring and give them notice you were leaving then implemented a switch?

How can people be so ignorant to something that costs a lot of money each year and is almost essential to their lives? If you're buying a car, you research, investigate and ask questions to make sure you know what you're getting and can make an informed decision. People seem to be taking energy for granted then complain when they get a huge bill or notified of a price increase. If you take more notice of what you're doing instead of expecting to have everything done for you, you'd have a far better service and have far more knowledge of what to expect with regards to changes in prices and where you stand.

For anyone wanting advice on avoiding the price changes. Once you've agreed a contract with a new supplier, you can call your existing supplier and ask for a price hold. Therefore, you'll be final billed to the same prices you were normally billed on; even if the switch happens after the increase date. This is something you MUST ask for as energy providers DON'T have to do this if YOU don't ask.

I think they also waver any early exit fees due to the price increases, I know they did with the increae back in November.

Tax evasion is illegal, reinvesting profit without paying tax on it isn't illegal and it's something businesses do. Apple have recently admitted doing it also, I personally know an accountant who has a few businesses and does the exact same thing. The media just like to use the term "tax evasion" to make it eye catching and suck people in for rating and sales on newspapers.

The owner of the suns done it also, inregards to the tariff it does say in the terms so if you switched online its your own fault not theirs
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

Okay Okay, let get this straight as I am also in the same boat. This product was "manifestly" mis sold and the advice given at the time of switching was a gross misrepresentation of the facts. Most customers signed up believing it to be a fixed tariff which clearly it is not. However, if you read the increase letter it states that you were not affected by the increase last November but what it fails to tell you is that the increase last November was lower than the present increase. The letter then goes on to justify the increase citing increased costs of deliver, and implementation of government schemes etc compared to last year, so it is entirely disingenuous to even mention the November cost increase as this was dealt with at the time. if these cost have increased across the business then logically they would be apportioned equally to every domestic customer and if that were the case then every tariff that is not fixed should increase by a similar amount. The fact is, the the ONLY tariff to increase is the Online January 2014 to which most customers switched to shield themselves from the previous (lower) increase in November (on the advice of Npower), and the only reason the standard tariff has increased is to maintain the 3% differential. I have absolutely no doubt that Npower panned this increase when constructing this tariff as a means of retaining customers and passing on the November increase by smoothing the percentage v.s previous increases in the full knowledge that the customers who would invariably leave (of which I am one) would subsidise the difference with the penalty fee. This is terribly cynical and in all probability illegal as it is blatantly anti competitive. Personally I have switched and will be writing to the chief executive of Npower with a copy to the Major newspapers, my MP and OFGEM. Sadly I also believe that the energy companies have been operating a cartel for years under the noses of the regulators and the profusion of pricing plans is a deliberate smokescreen designed to create the illusion of free market competition when actually they are profiteering at the expense of their so called valued customers.

Interested to know what people think.

Have you forgotten about the £105 annual discount paid in arrears that will be lost or did you, like many, not know of this T&C?

That, in my mind, is a bigger con than allowing to people think of it as a fixed tariff. The switching sites invariably show the annual cost after the discount is included, but people switching away, even if they are able to avoid the exit fee, have effectively paid more for their utilities if they lose the discount.

Of course it is in the T&Cs (before the holier than thou posters come along and say it serves them right), but the beauty of the comparison sites is that they save you wading through all the different tariffs and show you the most competitive for your usage. It's just that in this case, nPower seem to have found a way to get themselves high up the "cheapest" supplier list, without necessarily being cheaper.
