No Fran, just you can't understand when someone is asking a rhetorical question!

Sometimes someone with hyperthyroidism will have had the thyroid irradiated or removed and will then be on thyroxine for life (although levels should be tested regularly and dose adjusted as it can be tricky to get the right dose.).In my experience often people will say they still have overactive thyroid rather than have had it treated and now on replcement thyroxine (bit like having hormone replacement therapy after hysterectomy.)

  • Does anyone know if DLA is payable for a person doing dialysis at home?

The bumpf from the renal support at the hospital suggests yes, but the directgov site begs to differ...

It depends on the care/mobility needs and not the condition, so if you have care/mobility needs arising from the condition it is worth applying.
  • Hi
My other half has been diagnosed with sporadic !!!!!! paraplegia which is
The hallmark of HSP is progressive difficulty walking due to increasingly weak and stiff (!!!!!!) muscles. Symptoms appear in most people between the second and fourth decade of life, but they can start at any age.
Initial symptoms are typically difficulty with balance, stubbing the toe or stumbling. Changes begin so gradually that other people often notice the change first. As the disease progresses, canes, walkers and eventually wheelchairs may become needed, although some people never require assistive devices.
Other common symptoms of HSP are urinary urgency and frequency, hyperactive reflexes, difficulty with balance, clonus, Babinski's sign, diminished vibration sense in the feet, muscle spasms, and congenital foot problems such as pes cavus (high arched foot). Some people may experience problems with their arms or fine motor control of their fingers but for most people, this is not significant. Editor's Note: One of our community members, who is a primary care physician with HSP, submitted an article about pain management. Please see Articles - Pain.
Most people with HSP have uncomplicated HSP. There are also rare, complicated forms, which have additional symptoms, such as peripheral neuropathy, ichtyosis (a skin disorder) epilepsy, ataxia, optic neuropathy, retinopathy, dementia, mental retardation, deafness, or problems with speech, swallowing or breathing. These symptoms may have other causes though, unrelated to HSP. For example, someone with uncomplicated HSP may have peripheral neuropathy caused by diabetes.

Sorry thats so long just trying to give info, she applied for DLA about 18 months ago and they declined it. Which doesnt seem right to me she can walk without having someone to lean on, really struggles to drive anywhere as there is enough strength to control the throtal or brake and has no balance, like nearly stabbing me in the kitchen when she was chopping vegetables and just stumbled backawards (it effects her balance quite badly)

However when we went to her GP who is obviously aware he advised he hadnt heard anything and would absolutley have recommended that she get DLA!!

Is anyone able to tell me can we resubmit a claim and what it the best way to do it?

Most people recommend getting CAB to help you fill in the application form.

I did DH's with the assistance of his brother (who had applied with the assistance of CAB following a traffic accident), and he said he'd been advised to answer the questions based on his worst days.

My DH has osteoarthritis of the spine.
On the worst days he can hardly get out of bed and finds it hard moving around.
He had an x-ray which gave the diagnosis and it also showed that he has 2 vertebrae that are fused together.
He is prescribed ibuprofen 600mg and co-codamol both to take 3x daily.
He is able to work but sometimes he is unable to make it in to work when his back goes.Sometimes his left leg just goes on him and he collapses (happened once when he was coming down stairs at home, not good.)
He says he is always in pain but it just the degree of it that varies.
Would it be worth trying to claim DLA?
