Hypnia are terrible mattresses, hence the price.

You get what you pay for!

Also been issues to the fire regulations on their mattresses as well

Does anyone have an opinion on the Kaymed K3 gel mattresses? Or just the Kaymed brand?

I'm researching mattresses for my MIL who has recently had a spinal injury and will be confined to bed for 8 weeks, at least, once she gets out of hospital. It's tough to know what to get as it's impossible for her to try it out.

    Thanks

    I got a kaymed - it's the best bed I've ever had.

Great advice everyone, I;m going to bookmark this thread. We have quite a from Ikea mattress that does my dodgy back no favours at all.. We stayed at a B& B recently and it was like sleeping on a cloud. I asked what was on the bed and they said it was a divan with a sprung mattress and a memory foam topper.

Kaymed are a brilliant make, I sell their entry level product which is pocket springs and memory foam. 10 year warranty, very heavy which in my mind usually means a good product.

I have tried the K3 gel at a show and it does seem good, just very expensive, but looking around the web, Gel does seem to be the new next best thing. We don't have it on the shop floor as we think it's too expensive for our market and we would not sell many.

But I stand by what I normally say, a water bed is one of the best for back support in the world.

Thanks everyone for the confirmation that Kaymed is a good brand.

A local store has a K3 gel mattress that I can try - (not that that will be really helpful as I won't be using it) - so I'm going to check it out today.

I know it's expensive for what it is, but in my research I found memory foam to be considered good at relieving pressure and giving good support *but* MIL regularly uses an electric blanket and that's not compatable with memory foam - also FIL gets too hot so memory foam is not for him either.

The gel is meant to give better support and you can use an electric blanket so I think it's the best I can find for them that is within the budget. Hopefully the store has a good returns policy though...

I doubt the store will have a good returns policy, most shops don't. What are they meant to do with a 2nd hand mattress? Whats the point in investing time and money on a shop to display and let people try the mattresses, if they allow returns?

What product in life are you normally allowed to use in full and then return it if you don't like it?

Internet purchasing is different as the laws are different for distance selling. Shops that do have a returns policy normally make the terms and conditions very tight, so that you only upgrade and spend more money.

I agree with this - I had a water bed for over 10 years, it was lovely. I've now got a pocket sprung with latex top. It's very very good, but just not quite as good as the water bed was.
  • As it happens a lot of people seem to quote some medical study that said medium firm is best. I guess they are either not allowing for the weight of the person, or aren't thinking about people who sleep on their sides.

In my opinion memory foam reduces the firm feel anyway. Compared to the cheaper Ikea firm mattresses the Hjartdal is more like medium firm, but not as soft as the other medium firms.

Just an update to this thread. I take back what I said above. I bought the Ikea Hjartdal firm mattress back in June after I posted in this thread. Within a few days I was getting worse back pain than usual. I only returned it recently and Ikea swapped it under the 90 day policy for the medium (or medium firm) Flokenes mattress.

What can I say?? I guess the research is right. A firm mattress from Ikea feels like a board at times. Even with the memory foam layer on top I still had to return it. At least with Ikea's policy I got a second chance and they collected and delivered the replacement free.

The Flokenes seems like a very comfortable mattress, but I will wait a few weeks before I give my judgement on it.
