Mattresses for lower back again?

I have issues with my lower back and am wondering if anyone had good advice on mattresses in the price range of up to 400 for a king size??
I guess that I need something with memory foam and a firm / medium firm mattress. I do have my eye on the Ikea Hjartdal for 380 quid, which is a sprung mattress with a layer of memory foam on top. It feels great to lie on in the shop, but I am concerned the memory foam will cause me to get too hot at night.
Are Ikea simply offering the best bang for your pound, or are there any other decent size sprung / memory foam mattresses elsewhere that will cost me 400 or less for a king size??

Ikea DON'T do UK sizes, King Size in UK is 150cm by 200, Ikea is either 140cm or 160cm wide by 200cm. Might be an issue if going on a bed frame.
It doesn't state what thickness or grade of memory foam. If you're not worried the this is good value for money....http://bedgiants.co.uk/index.php/mattresses/deepsleep-silk-1000-divan-set-716.html
If you're worried about heat then DON'T get memory foam, because what are you going to do with it IF it's too hot for you. Is it worth taking the risk?Helping the country to sleep better....ZZZzzzzzzz0 -
Hi,
I can't personally recommend these mattresses as have never tried them but my Sister suffers with back pain and swears by a Sealy posture pedic mattress.
My parents actually went and bought one too several years ago based on Sister singing the praises of the mattress and they are both in their 70's and never suffer with back pain etc at the time they both paid a lot of money for these mattresses but Argos now sell them at good prices for a king size you can get one for about £350 odd but they do different variations with memory foam and pillow top etc.
Good luck with your search0 -

Oops, I posted in the other thread by mistake! I recommend pocket spring plus soft memory foam.

Pinky, thanks for the link to the older thread. I must be going mad. I remembered some of the advice from it, but forgot about the thread. The difference this time is I will have the money to buy it in a few days. I have checked out all the links. My bed is an Ikea bed, but I had a cheaper king size mattress on it. I guess that makes all the mattresses that have been recommended a bit small width wise.
I have checked out all the links. One of the main probs for me is that even at 14 stone the medium firm mattresses feel too soft. They just don't feel like they support my waist when I am lying on my side. My sister's Ikea mattress is the same.
However, lying on the firm Ikea mattress with the memory foam layer feels perfect. It supports my side very well. I think I will contact Ikea and ask them about the quality of the memory foam. My sister says she does not get too hot, but she is in a ground floor flat, and I think her place is generally cooler than mine.0 -
Please pick the mattress carefully if you have existing back problems.
It's a somewhat common misconception that a 'firm' mattress is best for a bad back, however a mattress that's too firm can increase pressure on the spine and a mattress that's too soft won't give enough support.
You sound like you have it well in hand, but as a fellow back pain sufferer I always try out the mattresses and go for the 'Goldilocks' principle - you don't want that's too soft or too firm; you want one that's just rightI was a DFW, now I'm a MFW :T0 -

As it happens a lot of people seem to quote some medical study that said medium firm is best. I guess they are either not allowing for the weight of the person, or aren't thinking about people who sleep on their sides.
In my opinion memory foam reduces the firm feel anyway. Compared to the cheaper Ikea firm mattresses the Hjartdal is more like medium firm, but not as soft as the other medium firms.
I have a lot of thinking to do.0 -
Incidentally, a couple of those mattresses linked to above have dubious returns policies. I suppose with Ikea I can at least exchange the mattress for a cheaper one and get vouchers to spend on something else.
With the above companies one of them is even refusing to exchange or refund once the packaging has been opened which is against distance selling regulations I believe.0 -
Just bear in mind I was recommending the "product" not the company selling it.
I don't have time to google which is the best company to buy from, I just posted the first one that had the product that I was after at a reasonable price.Helping the country to sleep better....ZZZzzzzzzz0 -
No, I take your point and thanks for your help. It's worth mentioning though in case someone else sees the thread and clicks on the item.0
