Shoes falling apart after 3 weeks

On the 3rd of May (I remember it as it was my best friends birthday) I bought a pair of ballet pump shoes from a local independent store.
I have worn them probably ten times and the sole is starting to fall off on both shoes.
They are a satin type material with a leather like coating and this is peeling off all over.
They only cost £20 but to us this is a lot of money and I can't afford to just go out and buy sopme new ones.
The shop has claimed that because I don't have a reciept there is nothing they can do as the shoes are not exclusive to them. I also noticed they have a sign up saying no exchnge or refund, which I am sure is illegal!?
Are they correct? If so can I try to locate the manufacture and complain to them, or is this just a lost cause?
I'm really fed up about this. They are the only casual shoes I own and I had been waiting a while to afford them as We are a family with two babies living on just one salary at tthe moment. I wish I had been more careful and bought some of better quality. Or at least had the foresight to save my reciept.
Many thanks.

No reciept needed as they are faulty but the shop is well within their rights to ask for a proof of purchase. The "Bloodlust" Clique - Morally equal to all. Member 10

If the goods are faulty you do not need a receipt. They signs regarding refunds and exchanges are irrelevant. The goods sold must be fit for purpose and free of material defects. Clearly they are not!
Do not be fobbed off, tell them they are contravening consumer law and that you will report them to Trading Standards. Their claim that you could have bought them anywhere else is irrelevant.
Good luck!
P.S. Take a look at https://www.consumerdirect.gov.uk this will give you all the information you require. They do not have any right to ask for proof of purchase. They will only return the faulty goods to their supplier for replacement or refund, so they will not be losing out.Don't lie, thieve, cheat or steal. The Government do not like the competition.

Thankyou I will do this.
I will definitly steer clear of this shop from now on, whether succesful or not!
All I want is to exchange them for a more solid pair. A refund would be ideal, but I understand why this is not possible without proof of purchase.Membre Of Teh Misspleing Culb0 -

Under the Sale of Goods Act you are entitled to a refund if the goods are faulty. Do not be pressured into accepting an exchange if you are not happy. Just stand in the shop armed with all the information from Consumer Direct and speak in a very loud voice saying what you want and why. They will soon get the message!Don't lie, thieve, cheat or steal. The Government do not like the competition.

As far as I'm aware - and I dont mind being proved wrong - this is incorrect.
I've worked in retail for a long time.
We will accept faulty items back that are ours without a receipt but do not have to take back anything that we sell that is available elsewhere.
As a customer you would have to prove you purchased that item from our store - it could have been purchased anywhere else at any price if it is not branded to our store.
I hope I'm making sense but basically I believe the store is right.
Did you pay by card - a bank statement for the amount you paid would be proof of purchase.
ITs also not illegal to have a sign up saying no exchanges or refunds as they dont have to give them. As long as the sign says in the tiniest print possibe 'this does not affect your statutory rights' then thats fine. They do not have to change or refund anything if you have changed your mind.
Have you mentioned to them that you only want an exchange? They may be more willing?Sometimes it's important to work for that pot of gold...But other times it's essential to take time off and to make sure that your most important decision in the day simply consists of choosing which color to slide down on the rainbow...0 -
From the consumer direct website:
Locate your proof of purchase. If you haven’t got a receipt, you can use a credit or debit card statement or cheque stub. Own-brand goods, something exclusive to one shop (such as a customised carrier bag) or the packaging may prove where you bought the item. If someone was with you when you bought it, they can back you up. Remember - it is up to you to show where and when you bought the clothes.Sometimes it's important to work for that pot of gold...But other times it's essential to take time off and to make sure that your most important decision in the day simply consists of choosing which color to slide down on the rainbow...0 -
If things go wrong
As soon as you have determined that there is a problem with an item of clothing that you have purchased:
Stop wearing the item of clothing.
Make certain that the fault was not caused by misuse, an accident, normal wear and tear or by not following the care label.
Remember - it is up to you to show where and when you bought the clothes.
Contact the trader straight away and report the problem. If you bought the items locally, visit the trader. Take the item, the packaging (if possible) and any proof of purchase with you. If you cannot take the clothes back to the shop, either phone or write to the trader.

I have no such proof at all, When we got the shoes I refused the packaging and put them into my bag. But I can however tell them the exact date and almost the exact time tht I bought them.Membre Of Teh Misspleing Culb0

I suppose here they particularly want to see how long you have had these shoes, for obvious reasons, and only some proof of purchase would show that.0

I bought a pair of shoes from River Island and over 2 months later they started falling to bits with just average use.
I simply went in and showed them to one of the staff, told them I bought them about 2 months prior but clearly they were not good quality and weren't doing the job they were intended for and they simply swapped them there and then. No problems, no questions and no receipt needed.
I'd just simply go back and ask!
