Pay-up.. To suggest you just setup and forget is ridiculous to think that do not then reconcile bank statements.. As others hinted had they been overcharging you £5 a month you would have picked up on it soon enough..0

No advice but £90 a month! Blimey!"If you think it's expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur." -- Red Adair0

They should at least offer staged repayments to clear the balance, but in Law, they are totally in the right. Giving anyone a DD does not remove any obligation on your part to ensure that the payment is made correctly.
It is not any mitigation that they 'got it wrong' - even if they had the correct details and didn't take the money - YOU still remain fully liable.
I'd be more concerned about the effect in your credit file, than on who is to blame.0 -

I think Virgin might suspect that the Op deliberately failed to pay, thinking the failed DD might never be noticed. I wonder what the person who has been paying for TWO subscriptions thinks about it all? He obviously doesn't check his Direct Debits either!0 -

I feel very smug that my TV costs nothing and my last month's broadband and phone bill was -£1.99 (usually £15 a month)."If you think it's expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur." -- Red Adair0

When you set up the direct debit you would have had a letter saying "we have set up your direct debit, please check the details are correct".
I have just changed my direct debit details with Virgin and they wrote to me confirming the details.
It would have been your responsibility to ensure the details were correct.
You'll have to pay up, I would suggest contacting them to arrange a payment plan.
I would also suggest checking your bank statement more carefully in future. If you need some budgeting software to help you, I have a YNAB (You Need a Budget) 3 licence I can give you.0 -
Clearly, you should/would have noticed the fact that the money was not coming out. You thought you were getting a premium service for free - but you were wrong. You should pay up in full immediately, or agree a payment plan.Getting married to a wonderful lady on August 10, 2012.
Need to save up, lose weight, reduce my money worries and get back to being the real me! :j0
