£860 Virgin !!!!-up, how to proceed?

This afternoon, pop the TV on and greeted with a message telling us that our account had been closed and to contact virgin media, on doing so, Virgin has claimed that our account has been locked as we have not paid any of our bills since signing up last July,
Apparently they cocked up with our did direct debit, linking our account with another customer whom has been paying both his and our subscriptions, this all despite me setting up a direct debit with my bank details when first signing up, not checking our bank monthly, thinking it was coming out all ok, that's why we set up dd's right?
Apparently they had opened a fraud investigation but with no correspondents from virgin until cutting all of our services how would we know?
The woman (in Asia) was difficult to understand, eager to leave (after informing me she had finisher shift!) and told me to contact the direct debit team tomorrow morning.
Where do we stand on this?
Please help! Desperate to see which way we can go with this!

Did you not notice you had an extra £860 in your bank account ?
As it appears to that you do in fact owe this money you need to contact them to arrange a payment plan for the monies owed.0 -

It's not like £860 appeared in our account more along the lines of not noticing £90 been removed each month,
All our Direct debits are set up to be taken out after payday, once you've given bank details, I kinda except it to come out!
Point is Virgin have messed up! (Not helped by my lack of awareness!)0 -

Indeed I'm sure thats the case but as pointed out in the original post,
Virgin made the mistake by not setting up the DD up correctly in the first place.
My point is, as they've made the mistake, surely it would be unfair to assume for us to make the full payment? unless smaller payments over a longer period?
I certainly will look at moving back to Sky when the 18 month contract is finished! Haven't got on with Tivo anyway!:)0 -
Do you not check your statements? I should think you will have to pay it as it is your bill!0

Keep the money and run to the hills...!!!0

You've had the service, so now you have to pay for it.
Mistakes happen and you really should have noticed £90 not coming out for months (or at least anything for virgin). If you're not checking your account at least once a month, what else is wrong or possibly you are being overcharged by a company.
As they made the mistake they may be willing to accept an interest free payment plan to pay the arrears, but you still owe the money.
Start checking your accounts more regularly from now on.0 -
Also, Virgin e-mail you with your monthly bill, and amount due. Although, granted, this may not have been as noticeable as your bank account.0

You effectively had £860 interest-free credit and now you expect a reduction? The best you will get is an agreement to make up the deficit over a fixed number of months.
If you didn't notice a extra £90 pm in your account, would you notice an extra £90 going out?No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
You're at it OP. Nice try.0
