I have discovered today, what it is that is eating my lily leaves - this dreadful red bug - I found threads on this site going back a few years and no one really came up with a solution to get rid of the bl----dy things. Well I've just tried a spray bought from my local cheapo shop for £1.99 and they have rolled over and gone to sleep!!! - mind you I did drench them pretty much. I also sprayed the soil (they are in a pot) don't know if that will kill any larve
It's calles Pestsheild - all purpose bug killer marketed from a company called 151 Products Ltd Glebe Street Manchester M3 1LG can be used on flowers and all edible crops. has all the usual precautions on the lable. Give it a go!!:)0 -
Useful to have this helpful but depressing thread bumped.
I noticed, though, that the RHS advice page has moved on their site and can now be found at http://apps.rhs.org.uk/advicesearch/Profile.aspx?pid=553. Good info on the evil critters' lifecycle and habits.0 -
I found two mating lily beetles on one of my many lilies 3 weeks ago. These were squashed and I used the spray that worked for me last year. I can vouch for the effect of the Bayer product Provado Ultimate Bug Killer. Three weeks ago and no more beetles! This product stays effective for 4-6 weeks.:j0

Size ten boot on the adults, check every day
They may noy have keeled over, just dropped to the ground, black side upEight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens0 -
Persistent little bu**ers ar'n't they! I take high delight in stamping on them
The little b**s lay their eggs on the leaves -then poo over the eggs so the larvae have a nice safe warm home to hatch & eat the lillies - disgusting little creatures. I generally do a beetle watch if I find one I always look hard for another as they seem to come in two's. I knock them into my hand as they are very good at landing on their backs on the earth so you can't find them & then I STAMP ON THEM (laughs manically) I've also used Provado this year - only once so far but I'm still on watch.........:p
Small victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle0 -
Had a brainwave today. They need suffocating. Tried washing up liquid and oil. Got some left over HEDRIN which eradicates head lice by suffocation. No harm in trying, and it works a treat. They immediately keeled over slipped off the leaves and stopped moving!!! If its gentle enough for kids heads it's gentle enough for Lilly leaves. Plus I can direct it at individual beetles not the whole plant. More economical and NO organo-phosphates.:j:j:j0

I wouldn't be so sure, that's their get-away ploy! The fall off the leaf and land upside down so you can't see them on the earth and act dead. Give 'em a few minutes and they'll be up again!0 -
I've been checking for 2 hours and they are still dead. What a fun life I have!!:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:0

Just tried the Hedrin isea, and its working brilliantly, just to try it I pulled off a leaf will grubs on it and soaked them in Hedrin.
Slowly they are falling off and slowing down. I will check again when I'm back from the shop to see if they are actually dead.0
