  • Oh dear! We have the same problem! Didn't see them last year, but now they have popped up! Looks like soapy water will be the first port of call!
  • I bought a lovely lily plant from poundland- unfortunately it included these free:mad:
should i try and treat them or just get shot of the plant quick, I only noticed the other day that an odd looking bug was eating the leaves, now i cant get the things off!
I do have other lilys in the garden so dont want them getting them too but fear its too late?
also will they get my veg:eek:

I've had these unwelcome little beasties for the last few years - usually I've flicked the adults off into a container then sealed it up and binned them! The larvae are hidden under those nasty sludgy deposits that are actually lily beetle poo - sorry if you're still eating your tea. This year I went for 'The Big Guns' and sprayed with Provado very early on - I spray very early in the morning or later in the evening and then stick a bin bag over the plants, just for 24hrs or so. As Provado is systemic, once the spray has been absorbed the bag comes off. It's worked for me this year - I've only sprayed twice and my lilies look healthy!

thanks- Ive been picking them off so far and stamping on them but dont think that solves the problem of the baby stage _pale_

  • Caught them on the first day they were doing beetle naughties on my one Fritillary. I suspect they came with the plant. Picked up two pairs of them, shoved them down the loo and flushed.

Haven't actually seen any since then, but some of the houses in the next street seem to have rather unhappy looking lillies. I do hope that I will be able to grow some plants without the things destroying them.
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

  • I shall try to see if i can get them off by hand today -hopefully it will work as i dont really want to use chemicals, i presume the soil is infected too? so will see if i can repot as well otherwise it may be binned or moved to front of house away from veg. no one else has lilies near by so will they keep to my area? dont want them flying miles:(

After demolishing my plants last year, I have been ready for them this time and regular inspections have found probably about 50 so far. No problems with larvae to date :) but different story at my Mum's house but have picked off all the dodgy leaves and things are ok.

Spread the message - my neighbour didn't even know about these cute looking little !!!!!!s and he is now regularly on patrol in his garden.

Glad I have found this thread! I found 2 lily beetles munching on the leaves of my pot grown lillies this morning. Took the beetles off and stamped on them but there doesnt seem to be any more - and I cant see an larvae or any other signs.

Should I get some spray or just be vigilant? I love lillies, they are one of my favourite flowers and mine are looking really good and are covered in buds.

Read this thread with interest as this year is the first year I've encountered them. My beautiful lillies have not made their usual appearance this year thanks to them :(

I have a book on Garden Pests & Diseases by RHS from 1980 and it says: "... not common in the UK and rarely found outside Surrey, Berkshire & Hampshire" PAH - 30 years on I think it's gone national!

They also recommended spraying with malathion, whatever that may be...
