18 year old son had insurance cancelled following motoring offence and 28 day ban
Options
Hi All
My son in a moment of madness at the age of 17 allowed a 16 year old to drive his car around a car park, he did say he could drive and he did have his own car despite being 16.
Unsurprisingly he crashed into 2 other vehicles, we notified our insurance company straight away and made contact with the owners of the 2 damaged cars. Since then my son has repaid all the damages to the cars, one direct to the garage of the owners choice and one by reimbursing the insurance company. His insurance was cancelled because of this although he is still covered by his employer to drive at work.
He was looked upon favourably at court receiving a 28day ban, no fine but being bound over for 12 months. The reality is that he has certainly learnt the hard way and now understands my lectures about driving being a privilege, he also knows that he is one of the reasons young driver insurance is so high. TBH he is probably a much lower risk now and despite being so foolish his driving has never been called into question and he has never been in any other form of trouble.
My question is does anyone know of anyway he may get back on the road, I have managed to get 2 quotes one for 8K and one for 10K and I'm really clutching at straws as I think he may have burnt his bridges and have to wait until he is much older but thought it worth asking he does expect to pay dearly but anything over 5K would be impossible for him.
We both know how stupid he has been so no need to point that out:(

Not sure where he can get insurance from for a 'reasonable' cost, AKAIK premiums for under 20's are around the £2k mark anyway for a group 1 car.
Is his employer's insurers aware of his recent conviction?PLEASE NOTEMy advice should be used as guidance only. You should always obtain face to face professional advice before taking any action.0 -
Hi
Thanks for replying, we notified the employer and they've checked their insurance. We were really fortunate initially to manage to get him insurance for under £1200 through multi car, mind not so lucky when the insurance company accidentally stopped the insurance for all the cars on the policy and not just his but that's another story.Make 11k in 2011 422.29/11,000;)0 -
He may have to wait another couple years before the premiums come feasible for him unfortunatly.0

Hi
That's what I've advised him, but just want to ensure I cover all bases.Make 11k in 2011 422.29/11,000;)0 -
One avenue worth looking at (and I'm only suggesting it because you say hes taken the lesson onboard) is to see what insurance on a classic car would be. He won't get a "proper" classic policy because of his age and history but he might get something manageable.
Most 70's and early 80's cars are surprisingly suitable as daily drivers and the less desirable ones can be bought in good condition for surprisingly little - think things like the Austin Allegro, Morris Marina, Triumph Dolomites (but not 1850s or Sprints!)
It may not be feasible with the cancelled policy and ban but it's certainly worth running a few quotes. To give an iea, my stepdaughter got a year TPFT on a Daf 33 for £350, at 19 years old having just passed her test that week!0 -
Thanks
He was thinking about that, my first car was an Anglia 105e:rotfl: so I'm a bit of a classic car fan anyway. Like you say it's worth a shot, he always did drive carefully and knows if he is lucky enough to get back on the road he'll need to keep it up.Make 11k in 2011 422.29/11,000;)0 -

Two or more years in an Allegro, Marina or a lesser Dolomite is probably a far greater punishment than anything the court could give him - verging on cruel and unusual even! :rotfl:0 -
lol I once owned a yuky brown Marina Estate and it was "in a state" I wonder if I can find one of them for him ;-)Make 11k in 2011 422.29/11,000;)0

How about a little 50/125cc bike? Not the quickest but may be cheaper to insure and still lets him get out and about by himself0

Dont forget he needs to notify them he has had a policy cancelled. This wont help. But they will find out.
Usually its when he needs to claim.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0
