When should I change to 30 day contract?

Hi,

I'm a bit confused

My current T-Mobile 18m contract (£31.??) comes to an end on 15 June

I wish to move to a £10 pm 30 day rolling contract

As it is now ~30 days to the end of my contract I phoned T-Mobile to give notice to change to this new plan.

The advisor said I can do it now, but would have to pay the remaining month £31.?? plus £10 pm starting now.

So really I'd be paying around £40 this month, which I obviously don't want!

He said I should ring when my contract ends.

I thought you had to give 30 days notice, so should I..
  • Do as they say, wait til 15 June to ask to transfer? (but risk being required to give a further 30 days notice, costing an extra £31 for said notice period)
  • Ring back and ask to transfer to new plan now, and pay £40 this month?
  • Ring back now and ask to transfer to new plan on 15 June?
According to the advisor I just spoke to, the last option is not possible, but I'm not sure if that's true.
Do you not need to give 30 days notice if you are taking out a new plan?

I'd really appreciate any help with this, thanks guys :)

You don't have to pay anything extra for giving the notice now. Full stop.
T-mobile are notorious for trying to rob their customers, but under some pressure they always refund the extra charges (if any).
That said, it is possible that because of some stupid computer system they often just muddy the water with all the charges and refunds so that ultimately you don't pay anything extra.

    Thanks for your answer

Just found this on My T-Mobile..

"At the end of your contract, if you'd like to cancel rather than start another contract, you'll need to give us 30 days notice. You can cancel before the end of your contract, but you might have to pay a cancellation charge. To find out if a cancellation charge applies, please see the legal information included with your phone or for more information please see our Terms and Conditions"

There follows a link to Ts & Cs, which conveniently, is broken!

Anyhow, from this it could be implied that I don't need to give 30 days notice if I'm not canceling.

    Would you agree?

The cancellation charge is the cost of the remaining months/days. I.e. if you cancel the contract before the min term expires you pay till the end regardless. Nothing extra.

Yes, I would. However, it will probably take some effort to explain this to their stupid CS.
