Thanks - did that last night on USB. Prob is I can't seem to find any files there, it's almost like no programs are installed and no files are there, yet it seems to think at least 100gig of the HD is used.

Did you manage to boot the machine using the Ubuntu DVD/CD? Did you manage to view the Hard drive contents using the File manager in Ubuntu?

I can't stress enough how important it is to backup your data before you repair your machine. Apologies if you have already done this though :)

    Full model number.

It's likely to be either Windows 7 Home Premium x64 SP1 U (media refresh) or Windows 7 Professional x64 SP1 U (media refresh)

Once downloaded, you can use the Windows 7 USB Tool to make a Bootable USB drive, then boot into their Recovery Environment and try to recover your files via Command Prompt.

Click through the Recovery Environment link to find some of the options open to you. You should be even able to move important files elsewhere before any clean install.

Its Lenovo W7 recovery disk from Ebay.. Lenovo direct was c£40.

Quite happy to reinstall W7 by ISO if needs be but was hoping there mighbt be some way to just go in and back up any files (don't think there's loads TBH as most of my work is just Excel and I have the main files) and 'repair' rather than total format/reinstall.

    thanks again

Startup repair shows 'registry is corrupt' and has tried to do roll back but not working hence I guess the looping round.

Not sure how I can check if I have 32 or 64 bit W7 installed without booting?

Waste of money...you should have asked here first. Recovery disc is a common or garden Windows 7 disc with a file and product key added. That's it. Money for old rope.

Better you took from my link as you know it's provenance. How do you know what is on the eBay disc?

If you follow the instructions above, you might be able to get in and recover files.

It's 64 bit. Try Home Premium first. Do you not understand what is within the Recovery Environment link?

See me before attempting re-install. I'll talk you through. Can't believe you wasted money on nonsense....when on a money saving website.

Right, have installed the W7 USB-DVD app. Downloaded the ISO (checked and I need 64 bit Home Premium), but W7 Download tool says 'The selected file is not a valid ISO file. Please select a valid ISO file and try again'.

Worth trying another app to achieve this?

Have tried re-downloading the ISO file but no joy.

    thanks
