No they dont know who I am but im not risking it like I said. Its irrelevant anyway and I wont be posting it just to satisfy your curiosity.
Id also like him to tell them hes not working 6 days per week but is it really as straight forward as that with the wording in his contract??? I suspect not. Its not possible to get everyone to tell them the same like I said and there is no union.0 -
What do you mean there is no union? There are plenty of unions out there - maybe the person and others should join oneNo they dont know who I am but im not risking it like I said. Its irrelevant anyway and I wont be posting it just to satisfy your curiosity.

Its a CHANGE of contract and from 5 to 6 days out of 7 for NO extra pay & is not reasonableWe’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Is it not too late for them to join a union now?
I know you say its a change of contract but doesnt the following mean they have to work as and when required because it doesnt specifically say only as and when required weekdays.
Your normal working week will be 35.00 hours, Monday to Friday.
You will however work such other hours as may be necessary or appropriate from time to time, to carry out your duties properly and effectively. Overtime is not payable for additional hours worked.0 -

Its not the same as saying we are getting a big order so can you stay behind a few hours to get it shipped or something like that
This is making a 5 day week a 6 day week, totally different

No its nothing like that. He has worked on an evening when they have said they want them to in order to benefit the business albeit against his wishes but like I said, hes not work shy and understands he needs to give more sometimes although he does give more most days by going in early anyway but hes ok with that as its his choice.
Ive said he needs to ask ACAS but reading above they wont be much help, apparently one of the guys is in a union and will seek advice but then it will be third hand information so who knows whats right and wrong.0 -

And that really is the point. You are asking strangers on an internet forum for advice on behalf of a third party, when that person (and his colleagues) should be taking direct legal advice on this matter, from someone who can consider all the facts and the relevant documentation.
If, as you say, this is a large nationwide company, and it is changing the contracts of all employees from 5 days a week to 6 days a week, on a permanent basis, for no additional pay, you can be certain that this will be in the media in no time (the daily mail would love a story like this!).
Not only that, but if you name the company, there is a very good chance that there will be other employees on MSE who might be able to shed some light on this.... or join in the protest.... or at the very least club together to raise money for decent face-to-face legal advice.
I am still not convinced we have the full facts - but in any event, I don't believe there is anything further I can usefully add to what has already been said.... and for that reason, I'm out
I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0 -

They havnt actually said theyre changing the contracts just that if the figures are not good enough on Friday then they will need to work Saturday to improve them. Isnt this just overtime???
If there are any others reading this that work for the company they will know who im talking about without naming them. As for the media, yes they would love it but somehow this company always works its way out or buys silence.
As for not being convinced you have the full facts, well ive disclosed everything I thought relevant and everything ive been asked apart from the company name as thats not relevant. Ive asked on here because ive seen people get advice, I just though there might be someone who would know but obviously if needs be we would seek legal advice. Thank you for all your help, hopefully it will just be the senior manages mouthing off and nothing will come of it although apparently some people did actually work on Saturday gone so it will be interesting to see the improvement (or not) in figures this week.0 -
I suspect I know which company your friend works for. We all have friends and/or family working for them.
Ask your friend if they have used 'needs of the business' line.
Companies are always examining there business and when they need people to work for them. I.e the company sounds like it opens 6 or 7 days a week. Your friend was lucky to get that contract with out having to do 1 in whatever Saturdays.
Again if it's the company I suspect and he does not agree, eventually they will try and edge him out. Wrongly so but nobody wants to work Saturdays, and when you work in that area, you have to do your fair share. He may end up losing that position if they say 'needs of the business' and he may end up working up to an hour travel from home.
Maybe he would be best seeking union advice and seeing if there is an alternative way around this, a solution that suits both parties0 -
Thea its not the company you think, I know that definitely from some of the things you have said, they are not relevant to this company at all. Noone has ever worked Saturdays, It doesnt 'open' as such. This is not a retail company, they do not sell products to customers in the way we go to shops and buy items.0
