As pointed out in post #8, that will no longer be the case from September 2013... http://www.education.gov.uk/schools/pupilsupport/behaviour/attendance/a00223868/regulations-amendments

In England. I don't believe the rules have changed in Wales, Scotland or NI. And imo, "exceptional circumstances" can be used to fit a number of scenarios so it still has the potential to be fairly ambiguous and up to the individual headteacher.

I'm sure it has here (Wales).

ETA - WAG haven't legislated (yet) but Cardiff Council have taken responsibility for approving in-term holidays away from headteachers.

I can just about understand parents taking children out of school for at least a part-educational holiday - but many just seem to end up at flippin' Disneyworld.

Also, as child-free people we obviously choose term time to go away - for the peace and quiet. :)

Even if it's educational, they don't need a holiday every year. If parents can't afford the holiday they want every year without paying peak costs then they could save and have them less frequently. To be honest, if I ever did take more than a day out of school it would be to take them to Disneyland or the equivalent.

The children you see on holiday might be on their school holidays though. Scotland, Ireland, etc. have different holidays to England's, and France stagger theirs.

There's a very good reason why they end up in Disneyworld - no queues!! Just because you have children doesn't mean you want to do battle with everyone else's kids!! I took my two out of school for three days last January to go to Disneyland Paris for my birthday. It's the only time they have been out of school for holidays. To be honest it was the behaviour of the adults there that was terrible, not the children, I was quite surprised. We did legoland in the school holidays once and it was the worst experience of my life. Never again.

Then you should be paying more for the privilege of peace and quiet, no queues and more free sun beds.

Parents are expected to pay far more money and give up all those things to boot!

Believe it or not, we value peace and quiet from other families too!

I also agree adults can be far worse than children anyway.

Go to an adult cinema screening and you'll notice far more people getting up and down, using phones, chatting and rustling papers than you will during a kids film!

Term time is the only time I will do Disney as I resent paying extra to stand in a queue all day.

I had an app on my ipod when we went last year that tells you the queuing times for the various rides. We were walking on to the rides, no queues (or very little), then when I had a look to see what the queues were like on the weekend when we came back they were all over an hour. And again you're paying more for the privilege!!

Same with Legoland (I keep harking back to, sorry). When we went in the school holidays we queued for over an hour for some rides which was hell on earth, and ended up seeing about a quarter of the park. The following year we went back on an inset day and the same rides were literally walk on's and we saw everything. It's alot of money to pay to spend your day queueing and missing most of what's on offer.

My friend was fined between £20-£50 (i cant remember the exact amount) per child per day in Feb when she went to Florida. If her partner had gone as well both of them were to be fined. Cost her a fortune as she has 3 kids at school :(

If I was being fined that much I would save the money to go in the school holidays!

You went to DLrP the same time as us last year I believe...?

We always go at that time and we're off to Florida next year, also in term time.

We went to LL last year, on a Sunday and Monday and the Monday was brilliant! I'd have been seriously miffed if we'd paid more to go Saturday and Sunday!

We're off again next week, in school hours! :j

Yes we did!! I forgot!! I was almost living on the DLP thread at the time!

One of my friends has just come back from two weeks in Florida with her DH and DD (8). She did the theme parks and also swimming with dolphins, etc.... For the amount of money she spent I wouldn't want to be shoulder to shoulder with a million other people.
