My oh travels the m6 from Stoke to Coventry daily, he has a conspiracy theory that the restrictions on the m6 are there to encourage you down the toll.
He tells me that frequently signs are showing congestion when there is none and always just before the toll entrance.

I've always laughed at him and told him he's been reading too many conspiracies, but it was interesting to head down that way in easter Sunday and see the same 50 signs with congestion warnings just before the toll when there was nothing on the road whatsoever other than us.

As the toll is privately owned and operated I can't see how highways world benefit, other than to keep their road more free flowing perhaps.

Do the government not get a cut of the takings from the toll road?

Reading the toll website my understanding is the private company who run the toll contribute to road maintenance on the M6 in general so the conspiracy might not be as far fetched as I first assumed.

No it's nothing to do with the government.

I famously had to put her on ignore as she kept on complaining about my posts to the Mods. Therefore I had no idea that she had posted that.

Still it doesn't change the fact that the M6 toll road is nothing to do with the government.

There is an element of government involment in so much as the toll owners agreed to invest £100 million into the local road network:
Investing in the regional road network
The M6 Toll is actively working with the Government on regional upgrades to the motorway
network. Improving the local road network in the interests of road users is considered not
only to be a key priority of the M6 Toll but an ongoing obligation to the local community.
    • In 2006, the M6 Toll entered an agreement with the UK government to invest over
£100 million into the West Midlands road network. As a result, the M6 Toll is
implementing plans to improve the link with the M42 and awarded a contract to
Costain to add an extra lane on the southbound M42 where it diverges from M6 Toll.
This is expected to be completed by June 2008.
    • The M6 Toll is also in discussions with the Highways Agency to further enhance the
regional network with a plan to build a much needed link to the M54.
    • We also have plans to improve signage not only on the M6 Toll but also on roads
surrounding and leading to the toll motorway.

However, I don't think they have turned a profit on the toll for some time so it's probably irrelevant.

As for the 'other' poster, I can't see what they have posted, only a username unless someone quotes their posts. That particular poster graces a lot of ignore lists ;)
