    Thanks for all the replies. I think seeing as they have offered to take off the default, I'll just agree to pay it. Taking it further for the sake of saving money, but with the risk of being worse off doesn't seem too appealing. It's taken quite a bit of work and fighting to get an agreement to remove the default- at first they was adament they was correct and no changes would be made, so I see this as a positive step. Although the bill was high, my bro got it to where it was and spent the money, so really it should be our bill to pay.
