we can't pick and choose what we pay for (quite rightly) so therefore the councils should not be able to start charging extra for services that should be covered by the tax.

Exactly, you choose to have a garden, not everyone has one!

What I have mentioned is some things whether you have them or not are in fact essential for society as a whole.

Having some twigs picked up for free isn't!!

Do what I do...don't pay for a green garden waste bin, just dump your garden waste in your general black dump bin, cover garden waste with your normal household waste to hide it, dustmen never check bins anyway, worked for loads of months for me.

Now back to watching Alex's last match at Old Trafford. By the way..I'm a LFC fan and am delighted with Moyes appointment....mmmm less than 24 months me thinks !!;):rotfl:

I don't care about my local council's plan to charge for garden waste, because I only have a small garden and I can shove the clippings etc in the other bin.

However, what DOES worry me is "which council tax service will they select for separate payment next?"

    Streetlights?

I doubt they will separate current services but I would expect that new ones could be charged for unless the rates go up.
I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.

we pay £60 for garden waste in our area, what's more we are restricted to 80 bags (6,400 litres) of general waste per year per household - if we want more bags we pay.......

I hope you're right. However, our own local council is in such dire financial straits, with 100 million quid to save over three years, that I doubt whether any of the services they are currently providing are totally safe from the scourge of separate pricing.

This service was offered free for two years by our local council, I believe they received a grant from the government to put the service in place, then subsequently there has been a yearly charge for collection. Notice the charge went up £3 this year as well.
