Local Council of Amersham now charging for garden waste disposal

Options
Whats next ? the rubbish - we are heading there folks.

Where does my council tax go ? They want 35 quid per year to collect the waste. If this isnt annoying enough when I see the local council employing contractors to look after lawns and hedges its a bit much. You cant tell me this is a temporary cheaper alternative. They are simply cash rich in a time when no one else is but seem to be unregulated.

The council in question is Amersham - disgusted with the British rip off again.

The Wirral have started to charge £35 as well, others are sure to be watching and thinking it will be a good idea.

Ours was always free in Ealing but they've been charging £40 for the last two years, I take mine to the green waste at the dump myself... I'm not paying for it to be removed. I know some of my neighbours dump it in a local 'green' spot which they wouldn't of dreamt of doing before the council decided to charge us.

Mine has done this for years.

I don't see the problem - you could take it to the tip if you'd rather not pay.

Ours (Bristol) have done for a while now - £32 a year for the collection service itself, and £21 for a 240L bin.

Agree with the above re: taking it to the tip.

My problem clearly (obviously not) is that I feel I already pay for it and am so busy bringing up a family that I dont have time nor want to chock up the roads with a pointless drive.

Given that only a minority use the service, I would suggest you do not already pay for it. Unless you feel those that do not use the service should have a discount on their CT?

A single journey once every few weeks is hardly going to 'chock up the roads' now, is it?

It dont seem that expensive per year to get rid of the waste, i would have no problem paying, i think its a good offer.
  • Our old council, Babergh District, charge £45 for a new 'subscription' to their garden waste service and £40 a year after that.
Our new one however, doesn't provide us with wheely bins so the local cats love people putting their bags out! We also don't have any recycling facilities in our block of flats, no bin/boxes/clear bags etc. I think we get forgotten about.

I guess thats the problem (people with your view battleborn) really some people cant see that they are paying twice and providing an appetite for the councils to push. So where would you draw the line - probably if it was 1000 pounds per year then you might disagree , but surely its a principle for those with less disposable income to yourself.

Yes I can't see it being a great thing. We should be evolving as a country not starting to fragment services like this.
