The alternative to Freecycle

Options
I read through (yep most all of it) the thread below on Freecycle, and all the critique. There seems a lot of unhappy people there, so if you're unhappy with Freecycle why not give Don'tDumpThat a try here: http://www.dontdumpthat.com

I can't go through all the issues people raised about Freecycle but here's DDT's answer to a few of those concerns:

People selling: Don'tDumpThat has a strict rules about re-selling and take measures to monitor this. Selling is allowed for things that have been repaired, refurbished etc, otherwise there's eBay, or the car boot.

Those disorganised endless lists: Don'tDumpThat is much better organised. There's an Offers and a Wanted forum each divided into sections of popular categories of items. Everything is easy to find, you can tell what's been taken and the moderators are hot on keeping things well organised.

Those emails!! : There are *None*, you get the very occasional email about important things - otherwise you have to go to the forum to offer and ask.

Greedy people: Don'tDumpThat has a fair use rule.

They also have great discussion forums - there's a really friendly atmosphere in the discussion, everyone exchanging information, supporting each other and general chat.

Don'tDumpThat isn't as big, but it's growing - and fast. Just 15 months old they have 124 forums and over 13,000 members. Some forums are very quiet, but only because people don't post, so if you are near one go and (maybe) be the first to post your things, and if there's no activity get involved and volunteer to moderate or help promote, start a discussion, or write to the moderator. Oh, and if there's no forum near you, why not consider starting one.

So, worth a try I think.
http://www.dontdumpthat.com and then click on Find a forum tab at the top, pop in your postcode and it will zoom to your area, or zoom out to find the nearest. Easy.

Any problems registering then drop an email to support@dontdumpthat.com. Excellent support too, and fast. :)

    Don't Dump That ...
  • Thanks poppycat. It is, but very outdated thread now with old membership figures. The new thread just helps people see the differences between Freecycle and Don'tDumpThat, and maybe help those unhappy freecyclers.

    Cheers :)

I have been a member of Lincoln.DontDumpThat for over a year, we now have almost 2400 members. The forums are very active, all kinds of items are posted daily, some items go very fast, sometimes in minutes! In the past we have given away a car, motorcycle, caravan, PCs, TVs, Sewing Machines, loads of baby stuff, mountains of books, every kind of kitchen white goods you can think of and even brick rubble and top soil! We also have very active discussion forums (like on here) BUT you can talk to people (and get help even) on your own area.

I used to use ebay to sell unwanted items, now I give them away instead of selling them, as I know I'll get my moneys worth back in the future, PLUS that good feeling I've helped others and kept things out of landfill too!

If you think this sounds like and advert, then I perhaps it is, although I am just a member, not a moderator :)

I've got to go now, I'm on my way to collect a portable TV and deliver a sewing machine on the way, both from the DDT forum!

  • Hello folks! I too am a member of DontDumpThat here in Lincoln. I joined about a year or so ago out of curiosity.Since then my wife and myself have passed on some stuff that was far to good to dump to those that have made use of it, for example, our sons baby clothes, pushchairs, toys and videos. We have recieved, a slide, games, a shed, a couple of computers (for me to tinker with!), and god alone knows what else!. But one thig we have got that was never advertised was friends and a sense of community and help. I'd advise anyone to have a look at the site, register if there is a group local, register your interest if there's not, join in, have fun, and feel good about getting rid of stuff you thought would be useless and recieving stuff that you thought had long gone! And remember......... if you dont ask, you wont get!
