Just slightly to one side of the subject of supermarket waste ~
I'm always suprised by the number of plants that are put for sale then just allowed to die through lack of watering ~ why??? every supermarket seems to be at fault here, even M&S, I noticed on Monday they they had racks of bedding plants that were very dry and very wilted, maybe beyond reviving. If the plants don't sell within 4 or 5 days they just go downhill till they are thrown out.
If they are so keen to avoid waste on the foodstuffs why are the growing plants any different? it's money wasted regardless of what the item actually is and if they saved money by not throwing out dead plants they could be less parsimonious with food waste0 -
Since reading this thread and the other one started by CTC about Avoiding Supermarket Challenge I've been inspired to read a book called Tescopoly by Andrew Simms - certainly food for thought.
I also watched this programme and was shocked but, I have to say, not entirely surprised. To me, it's just one more incentive to shop local, using my friendly neighbourhood butcher/baker/fish man while they are still there.0 -
I get my shopping delivered from abel and cole. Don't go to supermarkets any more.0

I too watched the Whistleblower programme last night, what stood out the most to me was the ignorance of some staff, the lack of care shown by them, my Mam works on a Deli in Sainsburys and they are very very strict, I know she wouldn't even consider putting someone elses health at risk and neither would the others. People there have been sacked for breaking even the smallest of food handling procedures. They won't even let staff take home stuff that is going out the same day, has to be binned. If they overorder on say Cheese, they'll sell overstock to staff as long as it has a few days on. I got a massive block for £2 last year when that happenedI am sure people are more 'grown up' and realise these bad pennies are not in every store, hoping my Mam and her colleagues don't get any backlash because of this programme.
As for the bargains, I get almost all my meat from a local Farm Shop on a regular order anyway, prefer the taste and quality. No doubt if there are bargains to be had Mam will get them and ask me if I want any.One day I might be more organised...........

If people saw the state of my kitchen at times...if I was a business I'm sure environmental health would have shut me down by now and I have never poisoned anyone yet!

My local butchers terrible, I seen out the back of the shop by accident, after that, the lies about stock and the stinking food I have had before, I wouldn't use him again. Farm shop I do trust and have used for a long time is a drive away but prefer to use them.
Also had major disasters from an Organic food delivery company, half frozen food etc, not good!One day I might be more organised...........

Couldn't agree more. Everyone should read this book it's brilliant. I was already somewhat aware of what went on before reading it but it certainly makes you think about where your food is coming from and what's happened to it on the way.0 -
I have worked for four major companies (not supermarkets though) and the same things happened with all of them, they were being run on more and more of a pittance in the drive to make more profits, which means less staff and more stress and pressure, and more targets to meet too. This happens with so many comapnies that I come in to contact with too, so doesn't surprise me at all that its the same culture in supermarkets. I can only be changed right from the top level if you ask me.
What does worry me is where am I going to get my meat from now? If I buy it from the butcher do you think he will let me have a look round the back to see how clean his premises are? In terms of cleanliness are butchers any better? Or wherever they get their meat from?
It also makes me feel a bit off about eating out and takeaways too. Short of growing all my own food and becoming a vegetarian Im not sure what to do.
It definately makes it more tempting to join the "month without a supermarket" challenge.0
