Right gels, give a feller a bit of advice. We just had a phone call from my BIL: my MIL (80) has had a small stroke and is in hospital for 2 weeks for observation, wife's on the phone right now speaking to her. Her whole family has always been highly hypochondriac, always exaggerating every slight medical problem and panicking over unimportant stuff like sniffles or a temperature.
Now I know a stroke is not minor but this one sounds very slight. She's already talking of flying out this weekend (in Europe) and I'm already thinking: big probably unnecessary expense because the extent of the problem has not been established.
I take it that (as usual) I am hopelessy wrong to even think of mentioning that to my wife, after all these years I am about on the point of realising you're supposed to be sympathetic, listen and sod the expense?
Is that about right? Advice please. What should be my reaction and what is my role?
No sympathy needed as it's my MIL not some relation.0 -

Personally I would tell her to go, as long as the expense is affordable, any illness when someone is their 80s isn't going to be a completely minor one. You never know what is around the corner. If I reading this correctly this is her mum and she probably wants to be there for her. If you want to be the good guy support whichever decision makes.0 -

Two pieces of advice with in laws to keep the peace;
1. Whatever you say, say nothing and
2. Say nothing 'til you hear more
Take your pick.never stop doing your best because someone doesn't give you credit0 -
