A pair of scissors for that inevitable moment where you think "I'm never doing this again" - y'know just for the giggles :D

hard to say really. to be honest half the stuff I packed in my hospital bag wasn't used anyway. I'd take something to read, toothbrush etc (in case you're there ages) and something to drink. The thing is though, if you are there ages, then there'll always be a newsagent type shop in the hospital where he can get himself some mags or food or whatever. My labours took an age, so much so that my oh went out for lunch with my mum for an hour! On the other hand, hopefully yours will be quick, in which case he won't really need anything. If he's thirsty, they have water there for you. If you have one, take an ipad or something with some films on it. I love to read and packed a book, and even though I had ages to read it, I didn't (bit hard to concentrate when having a contraction every 2-3 minutes!) Good luck though!

For our second baby, I'll definitely suggest my OH takes a book. I had pethidine during the first birth and spent about 4 hours in a stupour. I was very grateful he was there to give me sips of water (gas and air drying my mouth), but wasn't really up to much conversation.

Also snacks, and maybe some change for vending machines. Depending what time your labour is, he may want to pop out to get a sandwich before the hospital canteen closes (my OH's dinner ended up as the half sandwich that I hadn't been able to manage for lunch).

I had some pethidine during one of my labours and my other half found it hilarious. Apparently at one point I suggested he try to bribe a midwife to give us some more so we could have it at the weekends when the baby was asleep!

I was taken into hospital late on a Weds night. Husband sent home to sleep, i was induced at 6.30 am Thursday morning when husband returned, daughter born by emergency section at 9.30am, husband home by 11.30am as baby in SCBU.

As WestonDave says, don't make too many plans !

Or you could be like me, when we went in with dd2, they told oh to stay as they thought things would happen quickly, that was at 9:00pm, he slept on 4 chairs (different heights) whilst I slept in a bed. The next morning we got up, I was given breakfast, we went to the cafeteria for his breakfast, we walked around the grounds, and walked, and walked....I was given lunch, we went to the cafeteria for his lunch, we did some more walking around....by this time my waters had been broken for too long so they hooked me up to the antibiotics & gave me something to speed it up (I had been almost fully dilated for half the time, but with no pain and the midwives had kept coming to talk to me when we were back on the ward as I was a bit unusual!)

So you can either take loads and not use it or not take a lot and be desperate for things to do....I know which I would rather.

Also, we ended up staying in for 3 days with dd1, so oh had to hunt for extra stuff. When I had dd2 we took a spare bag for the car with extra nightshirts, clothes etc for me, nappies, baby grows etc for dd....as we ended up staying in with her for two nights this came in very useful.

Change for the carpark/vending machines and possibly an easily squashable blanket and pillow in case he ends up having to do what hubby did and sleep down on a yoga mat beside a birthing ball on the floor (they kept me in to put me on the drip to stop contractions when I looked like having another preemie)... he had a cracking dream the moon was going to fall on him by all accounts!

Definitely food - I went into hospital at 9pm on a Wednesday evening with DD1 and finally pushed her out at 8:29 on Thursday :eek::eek:. He was starving ;)

Also love the idea of something like this for first pic of hubby and baby

At the end of the day, comfy clothes, a toothbrush / mouthwash and telephone numbers of everyone you want to contact!
