I worked at a supermarket while at uni. I remember getting a lecture off a lady who was about to unload her basket onto my belt but changed her mind because I had dared to tuck my hair behind my ear (too short to be tied up) so she told me how unclean I was and said she would go to another til.

Sorry love but I'm not a robot and occasionally I will touch my hair/face and it was so tempting to tell her she could go to my neighbouring checkout but I'm pretty sure the operator had been scratching his !!!! in the last few minutes.

I have to ask them to move, or I turn my back to them while i'm entering my PIN now. I find it a real intrusion of my personal space, especially as it's my banking details they might see. :o

I hate hate hate this!! Have people never heard of personal space? I have been known to ask people if they would like to climb on my shoulders so they can get a bit closer :D

Gosh, I take DS (19 months) shopping with me, is it just kids in supermarkets in general that annoy people or badly behaved ones? Short of leaving DS at home on his own theres not much I can do!
However he is always very good, sits in the trolley seat and likes to help put the shopping in. I was always take him a drink and I make sure he has a snack in his bag, half the time though I don't think hes hungry its just seeing all the food makes him want something.

I agree with most of the things said on here, a shopping trip is a sure way to raise my blood pressure!

I hate people bashing me with their trolleys, and it annoyed me even more so when I was pregnant with DS. The amount of times people would barge straight into my bump with their trolley was infuriating.

I think there should be a strict one way system around supermarkets, and if you forget something tough :rotfl:

My pet hate is supermarkets who think shoppers are clueless and gullible enough to be easily conned. All those so called special deals and offers they make available, when by using some basic math and applying common sense you can buy the same thing cheaper. It has been going on for years, my dad taught me how to not fall for such gimmicks from a young age.

In Asda they currently have 350g of Lake district cheese at £3.50, right next to it is a twin pack of the same cheese 2 x 350g for £4. I found myself wondering how many people picked up the single block.

Even more bizarre the single packs were on offer at 2 4 £5 so still more expensive than the twin pack.

People that let their children push the trolley (badly) or worse still, scoot up and down the aisles on it.

People that position their trolley lengthways in front of the reduced section so nobody else can get to anything.

Smelly people, and how, once you've encountered someone with terrible body odour, short of going the wrong way round the supermarket you're pretty much going to keep bumping into them every couple of aisles (or worse still, be trailing in their wake.)

This one is more of a garden centre thing than a supermarket thing but I hate how, when I'm browsing, my totally uninterested DH is so hot on my heels that I stumble over him if I turn back to compare something.

I love those ones! When I first got a garden I lived a couple of minutes walk from a Woolies that would do that so I'd go and rescue them for pennies to take home to my plant hospital ;)

Miss Independent, it's none of other shoppers' business why you are following a certain diet. It's your decision what you eat, and if they aren't the ones buying, cooking and serving your food they have no right to remark! How rude they were to do so.

I don't like people being rude about toddlers having tantrums either. It's what kids do at that age. They call it the Terrible Twos for a good reason. And a supermarket is a horrible overstimulating environment, no surprise it triggers a tantrum. I'd happily join the kid half the time! From what I hear from parent-friends, ignoring the strop seems to be the best and quickest way of bringing the child out of it - however if the snide adults know a better way, I bet the poor mum would appreciate your help rather than your looks and tuts!

However I'll contradict myself a bit by saying that I don't get the entire-family-shopping-trip either, why doesn't one adult shop and the other(s) do something else with the kiddies? For the children's and the parents' benefit not even the other shoppers. Why take them somewhere they won't enjoy and will start crying, when an alternative exists?

Why do whole families have to go shopping?! Seriously mum, dad, four kids et al. If it was allowed some would probably bring the pet dog as well. Makes things so much more crowded and hectic. I really can't stand being bashed into by little kids trying to drive trolleys or rushing around playing some sort of game.

People who eat the food as they go round the supermarket, unless you have a medical reason, can you not wait until you are out of the shop.

People who block the reduced section with their trolleys, or nick the Whoopsies out of your trolley!

The inane chat at the checkout! Have you found everything you need? What are your plans for today? Oh, I love those. I just want to do my shopping - not pass the time of day with you.

Re-reading these, I realise I sound like a grumpy hag, but I'm really not. Shopping just winds me up.

I relate to almost every post!!

The stress starts before I've even got to the supermarket. I know it will be busy and stressful and there will be lots of people moaning on MSE later because a mum (me) took her kids shopping with her!! I'm already in a bad mood as OH works very long hours and I can never rely on him to be home at a certain time so I have to do it on my own.
Drive to the parent & toddler spaces only to find they are full with people who don't even have kids. I did look at a lady climb out of her car with no kids in sight and was fuming until she told me she was disabled but there were no disabled spaces. So now if there's no space I figure it's better I struggle with two kids in a normal space rather than a disabled person struggling.

I detest self service tills - they never work for me so I avoid them as it's quicker to wait in a queue than wait for an assistant to sort out the problem.

Big bugbear is that customer service tills never have anyone there or they are so slow. They are there to sort out problems and yet they don't seem to keen to assist in that.

I have noticed lately that I get asked if I need a bag. If I have a trolley full then yes I need a bag. So I get 2 or 3.....and then have to ask for more.....and then more.....just give me a load of bags to start with
Worse than that though is when they ask if I want help packing, I say no and they start packing anyway. I like everything in order and I get far more in a bag than they ever could. It always annoys me when I specify no bags for online shopping and it comes with bags!

I don't mind chatty till staff - it's preferable to the ones that don't even acknowledge your existence!
Recently I was shopping and the girl was quite chatty and I realised she was getting a bit over-friendly when she told me I had far too many chocolate bars and we must eat really unhealthily!!
I didn't correct her and neither did I mention her hair needed washing as I know when not to overstep the mark!
