Reasonable Discount?

Hi,

I viewed a Ford Fiesta Zetec 1.4 today. 2011 (11) plate, 23,000 Miles.

Its priced at £8,995.

I have a KA to part-exchange which the garage said is worth £500-600 (I think I could get £800 private but can't really be bothered with the hassle).

Based on all of the above, I was offered the car on part-exchange for £8,400. So £0 discount. Does this seem normal?

I walked away as he said we were on completely different ballparks. He wouldn't budge and I said I was thinking more £7,700 part-exchange (as I had seen exactly the same car but 30,000 miles for £8,300 elsewhere).

I was literally sat down for two minutes and thats it. I'm not great at negotiating (first time!) and he didn't seem like he would budge and I wasn't going to pay £8,400 nor was I going to budge first. BUT I would pay £8,000 for this car, no more though.

Do you think I need to sweat it out? Call with my offer tomorrow? Give up and face that you can't always get a discount off a car (really?!).

I've seen the same car, less miles this time (20,000), in a different colour for £8,800 so I do think their price is over-priced.

Its just been reduced from £9,500 to £8,995 but I don't think that should come into the negotiations as it was reduced because it was completely over-priced for the market?

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks

Hi I once used to sell cars , the reason its drop it price is he can not sell. stick to your guns if you want to pay only £8,000 then do. When I was a car sales person the going profit was £1000- £1500 SO NO MATTER WHAT GOOD DEAL HE SAYS, HE IS NOT LOOSING BELEIVE ME. its hard to sell cars now as I was talking to one of my old work colleagues just a week ago .

One suggestion is to get someone else to phone or go to the garage and let on they wish to buy only no trade in just a straight cash deal . see what price he will do then you know how much he really is giving you. IF YOU GAVE HIM THE ASKING PRICE HE WILL REALLY HAVE YOUR CAR FOR NOTHING AND STILL HAVE CASH IN HIS POCKET . hope I have been of some help.

Thanks Debbie. As far as he is aware I'm only prepared to pay £7,700 plus trade-in my £500/600 valued car (I kept the £8,000 to myself for negotiation purposes!). I did think how can you not even give a couple of hundred but I started doubting myself! This garage sold me my current car and we didn't get much off on that one, and I've spoken to them before about another car that they only knocked £200 off and I walked away.

I might see if my Dad will go at the weekend to see what price they will give him for a straight cash deal. What do I do if they offer him much lower than they have me? Awkward! Ha.

    5DR, Magenta colour.

The one I've found with 3,000 less miles at £200 less is black. I'd go for black if I would save a bit of money, but prefer the Magenta.

My current car is KA Collection 1.3 (2002) - going on auto trader between 800 - 1,200 at moment. Its done 71,000 miles. CD player needs code, air con has broke, and the keylock on the drivers side only locks - you have to use passenger door to unlock!

I can help you out with the radio code.

Couple of days ago we had a value on a 03 Luxury KA Duratec engine 47,000 9 months mot, runs fine, was offered £500 and haggled to £800. I can;t see you getting 1200 for yours.

Thanks, thats useful to know. I'd let it go for £600 like the garage are suggesting, but still think they should be able to offer some discount off the car?

On the phone they said 'don't worry, we will sort out a good deal for you as you are an existing customers ' - what's a good deal about knocking zilch off the car?!

Seems a steep price to me for an 11 plate, not sure where you are in the country but my neighbour picked up a 62 reg pre-facelift a few months back 5dr Zetec for under £10k. I've gonna get grief for this, but try a search on Evans Halshaw to give you an idea of prices.

BTW PM me if you need your radio code, I lost mine a while back and they are easy to retrieve.

They're using any discount they would have given you to bolster up the price of your trade in.

Gumtree is full of 02 Kas for £795, and any trader is going to have to fix the problems in order to have a hope of selling it.

I'd say trade price on your car is £300. The dealer will hope to move it on for £400 to some trader. The trader will do the repairs for £100, and stick it on gumtree for £795 with a view to taking £700 and getting himself a couple of hundred profit.

So realistically, they're probably knocking £300-400 off the price of theirs and giving you £200-300 for yours.
