ive just read all through these posts and am glad that the dog is finally ok. i had an alsation who sadly died at 13 years old a couple of months ago from a tumour, anyway a few years ago he broke his knee and i had no insurance and the bill was 900.00 anyway i put this on my credit card and paid it off eventually, the point i am making is get insurance if u want to but for an alsation to be insured for 13 years would have been loads more for me than 900 as i also have a rescue dog and 3 cats it would be astronomical. at the end of the day these forums do encourage healthy debate amongst different people but what has gone on here i think has been a witch hunt, he only posted to get other peoples opinions and the usual morons have started slanging matches. well dont bother replying to this trolls as i dont usually come on this forum and certainly in future steer clear.
  • i think it is pertinent now to confirm that i was the vet involved with this case
and i would like to now make several points :

    1. firstly i am pleased that daisy has made a good recovery
    2. i also refute several of the accusations that smartsuit has made. i however do not see the point in itemising these as i feel it will achieve very little. the point is that the royal college reached their decision to close this case after reviewing statements from both parties. it amazes me that
my detractors were nieve enough to think that smartsuits interpretation would not be biase. it would be interesting to know what they think now.
3 regards pet insurance i think that it is irresponsible of an owner to only consider what they will do regards costs after their pet has sustained a serious injury. this is even more so in multi pet housholds. i advise every client to get it especially if they can not provide an alternative.
    4. i am interested to generate healthy discussion about this. it would also be interesting to know what other vets think.
    thanks again

It is difficult to know what to think without hearing your side of things as well.

I do agree that pet insurance (or putting money aside specifically for pet injuries) is sensible if you have a pet. I don't think it is irresponsible not to have pet insurance, but I do think it is irresponsible not to make sure that you have some way of affording treatment if your pet sustains an injury.

However, according to the OP, she did have a way of affording treatment, but it would take a few days to obtain. She said she did make it clear that she would be able to afford the full fee in a matter of days and left all manner of details with you to ensure that it would be paid. We all have the odd day where money is tight. If she could pay within a few days I would have hoped that would be acceptable.

I am not sure what to think about vet costs - they seem very high in many cases and while I know that the medicines, injections etc are costly in their own right, I do wonder how much of a profit vets make on their services. Like all essential health services, I think basic veterinary treatment should be available to all pets, whether the owner can afford it or not. According to the OP you did not offer basic veterinary care to her injured animal. I have no way of knowing whether or not that is true. I hope very much that even if she could not pay on the day, you still offered to relieve the pain of her dog.

I think many who have followed this thread would like to know that. Can you confirm whether or not the animal was sent away with or without pain relief?
    Thank you.

Firstly, I have nothing but admiration for your position as a vet, but I think your wrong when you call people without pet insurance "irresponcinble". Nobody automatically ASSUMES that a pet is going to have injuries, and it would be irresponcible for a pet owner not to ensure that a pet is treated if it becomes ill, much the same if a parent doesnt do likewise for an ill child.

I could come across a cat or dog, agonising in the street from a hit and run, it would be heartless and cruel if I were to just carry on walking, but as I am not responcible for either the pet, or the injury, does that make it irresponcible? Not everyone CAN afford pet insurance, but which would you prefer, the pet to be as a stray, or the pet to be looked after as best as possible.

If my pet suffers an injury from a drunk driver for example, does the driver become responcible or is it upto me? Ultimatley, I would be more concerned about my pet, and no matter how much it cost, would gladly pay without haste, if I didnt have the money, I would work out a way of getting it.

I dont have health insurance, that does not make me an irresponcible parent. as much as not having extended warranties on my computer makes me an irresponcible customer.
