The data compression is the first thing that came to mind with this. Potentially you may get quicker speeds which bump up the quality of images on websites.

In terms of the 500MB data allowance it can be more than manageable. There are still people who use dongles with this sort of allowance let alone smartphones.

I have always found with this sort of allowance you should turn off push email and select to manually retrieve your mails when you need them. Turn off background apps and when you put your phone down or in your pocket get into the habit of turning mobile data off altogether... You should quickly see your allowance go much further.
  • If you have a smartphone and do not have a tariff with u/l data the very least you should do is use one of the free usage apps like Bill Angel which can be set up to alert you when you get near to your limit in any month (Bill Angel alerts start at 50% off of allowance used on Mrs MBS's phone). It's a very sensible, entirely free way of preventing those silly bills we read about.

    Go with 3 unlimited data

^^^^this, and actually use your smart phone as a smartphone, without having to cripple it, you don't have to worry about high bills, going over your allowance, not watching that cat video on YouTube....
