Doesn't pretty much every person in the uk have a mobile phone these days? And don't all phones have calculators?

I wonder what the Trading Standards people would make of them selling loose fruit and veg' but not providing customer scales?

Why would this bother trading standards? The price per kilo is displayed with the produce and the item is weighed (on calibrated scales) at the checkout where the customer can see the weight and the price on the till - if the customer sees the weight/price and doesn't want to pay it they can choose not to buy the item.

On the OPs points - Consumers making assumptions about price rather than switching their brains on and properly looking at price markings hardly qualifies as a 'scam'. Supermarkets offer choices and it's up to us to look at the available choices, decide what is the best value for us and buy that. Calling this a 'scam' isn't appropriate (IMO) and think doing so belittles the experience of those who truly have been scammed (some of which have lost their life savings and really suffered).

For some people the pre-packed veg (even if it is a little bit more expensive) can be better value because they don't want to waste time selecting/packing it themselves or they may think the packaged veg looks better (ie recently I was in a supermarket and all the loose carrots were HUGE but the ones in the pre-packed bags were smaller - I bought the pre-packed because I prefer to use smaller carrots because big ones can be rather tasteless and woody). We all have choices to make and it's lazy/ignorant to think that we don't need to look at the prices of items being offered for sale and make an informed choice about what to buy.
